Cycling

I like cycling. I prefer it to running, mind you - there's not much I don't prefer to running. However, moving on...

Over the last few months I've worked out a nice circular route in a local park. Those who follow my runkeeper will have seen occasional comments on the excitement caused by overenthusiastic canines and (perhaps worse?) British ( Read more... )

You speed demons with your disregard for elderly council folks.

Surely less than 5mph is a dangerous speed to cycle at. 4mpg is a reasonable walking pace. Even when cycling a fair bit, I had to work much harder to stay upright at those sorts of speeds.

Under 5mph, and you're pretty much in specialist Slow Bicycle Race territory. It's a very slow jog, or, well, I'm reasonably certain I can walk slightly faster than that, at least for short periods. Er, anyway, nice work trying to get the council to see reason. I believe the next stage is Complaints, then Ombudsman.

Bravo.

First, even fat kid smith runs at more than 5mph so that's too slow to cycle. Second, how many people have a tachograph (sp?) on their bike? Short of knowing that 5mph is wobblingly slow, I wouldn't have the faintest idea how fast I cycle.

Nice letters, and I agree with the non-regulatory approach (mostly - I still can't quite bring myself to trust the general public not to be total idiots all the time). I also echo Hep's statement about not having a clue how fast I'm going on my bike - it's a nice-but-old road bike and quite quick but there's no speedo.

On the other hand, it would be quite fun going out for a run and pegging it past all the 5mph constrained cyclists - or would they make me slow down from a highly dangerous and irresponsible 8.5mph too?
