Warnings: Spoilers for the third season of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Dream Effect: Generally, feelings of heartbreak and anger, determination, defiance, and being composed but on guard. Also, underneath it all, love.
They--she and Zuko, that is--are in a dark cell, the only light coming from the open entrance. She's leaning against the wall, slightly hidden in the shadows, while Zuko, right in the path of the light, sits in a chair, his face buried in his hand.
"The truth is, I guess I don't know you," Mai says, before taking out a scroll and letting it unravel itself. Her tone is rather monotonous considering her feelings, but this time, there's an edge to it.
"All I get is a letter? You could've at least looked me in the eye before you ripped out my heart."
---
The guards are about to the cut the gondola line. Mai's no fool; she knows exactly what that means. The gondola will fall--and Zuko will die. He's a traitor. For someone like him, it's a fitting punishment. Mai can still remember her bitterness, and how much he hurt her when he left. It's hard to forget, especially since she just saw him not long ago.
But she can also imagine how she'll feel when he dies, and something tells her that that will hurt far more.

"Leave us alone," Azula orders to the guards behind Mai. Mai's head is still bowed, so she doesn't bother to look at them as they obey. She knows that Ty Lee's here, though, watching from a close distance. This isn't about her, though--this is between Azula and Mai. Then, Mai looks up with a calm, if not defiant, expression.
"I never expected this from you," Azula says, her eyes narrowed. The Fire Nation isn't kind to traitors. Zuko is proof of that. And Azula, especially, won't be kind to those who personally betray her, as Mai just did.
---
"I didn't mean to--" Zuko tries to say, but Mai refuses to give him that chance.
"You didn't mean to?" The idiot. She walks over to him, reading the letter out loud. By now, she's already read it over and over again, as if that would somehow change the contents. Again, despite the fury rising within her, her voice is remarkably passive for those who don't know any better.
" 'Dear Mai, I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but I'm leaving.' "
This time, it's Zuko's turn to interrupt. "Stop! This isn't about you. It's about the Fire Nation."
"Thanks, Zuko." Mai tosses the scroll at his head. Briefly, she wonders how she even fell in love with him in the first place. "That makes me feel all better."
---
Almost effortlessly, she throws her knives. The two guards with the saw are pinned to the wall in an instant, as the saw drops to the floor. Both are clearly surprised to see her, and one demands, "What are you doing!?"
"Saving the jerk who dumped me."
Immediately, two other guards run towards her, before tossing a ball of fire at her.
As she withdraws more knives, Mai smirks.
---
"The thing I don't understand is why. Why would you do it?" Azula asks. "You knew the consequences."
She couldn't have asked an easier question.
"I guess you just don't know people as well you think you do," Mai answers. She's still angry, but in the end, that doesn't change anything.
"I love Zuko more than I fear you."
---
[There are essentially two things going through Mai's head right now: One is that Ty Lee might see this. Oops, looks like the secret's out. Two, that she kind of misses Zuko, but not going to say so, thanks.]
