I've been reading Burning Chrome by William Gibson, a collection of short stories, including Johnny Mnemonic (a decidedly better written story than the movie was.)
I just finished The Gernsback Continuum, which is about the idea of the future we had back in the 1930's, with huge flying wings, uber streamlined cars, and cities built of chrome

The Gernsback Continuum was two things ultimately. It was a declaration of a new aesthetic and an explanation of the aesthetic in the context of the current one. His UFO debunking friend provides the voice of "reality". Ultimately, he explains why it's not really "the year 2000 that never was", but "the year 2000 that we built up to and made a part of our culture ( ... )
