The point of "Happy Holidays" isn't to "sanitize" Christmas, it's to make a greeting to a stranger more inclusive.

I see what you are saying, but I have to respectfully disagree (only slightly). The greeting is what you are celebrating and asking other to join. It's not about guessing what the other person is celebrating. A good customer of mine (who is Muslim) wants me to greet him with Merry Christmas. He says that it makes him feel welcomed into my celebration. Using the generic "Happy Holidays" isn't really inviting a person to join you. I use Happy Holidays on occasion, like when I actually mean more than one holiday. But when I offer my greetings for Christmas, I mean Christmas. Likewise, I want someone celebrating their holiday to greet me with the appropriate greeting. Like I say, it's an invitation. And and invitation by itself should always be inclusive. I do realize that there are people who don't want to recognize other people's celebrations. But that's their problem, not yours or mine.
