I wonder if Apple would last in an environment where people could buy their hardware third party like with PCs. I mean, it's technically POSSIBLE, as this shows, and there are specialty companies but... I get the impression that they make most of their money on bloated hardware prices.
But, yeah, there's actually a large market of Apple hardware. In some cities (like NY), there are several Apple stores in close-ish proximity to each other just because people treat them like convenience stores. The sort of, "oh, I'm walking home, but could sure use another skin for my iPod", so they just pop in. They claim that the stores are saturated so they're certainly not losing money on it.
