The Manual of Detection, jedediah berry: like a mashup of sensibilities, maybe lemony snicket writing The Shadow of the Wind.  actually, it reminds me most of the movie Dark City, crossed with a 50s screwball comedy, like Dark City written by Preston Sturges.  read with The Crying of Lot 49.

13 Reasons Why, jay asher: an ambitious teen novel, that is a bit of a failure.  a girl sends tapes to 13 people explaining why she comitted suicide.  the conceit is decent, but no story can really earn the pathos asher strives for.  read with Speak.

Middlesex, jeffrey eugenides: i liked it.  bookclub anyone?  read with Oscar Wao.

on my favorite podcast, chris connelly and bill simmons got into a debate as to what is the definitive movie of the decade.  and i hated all of their picks.  almost famous, the dark knight, etc.  and then connelly gets an idea, and right before he speaks, i know what he is going to suggest:  The Sopranos.  Done.  it's the Sopranos for the aughts.  ( Read more... )
