The mysterious incident of the swatch in the nite time

I am a bit frustrated! I've been working on the Drops Cardi and since my gauge was off (I had 20 sts per 4", when drops called for 17 sts) and I did some calculations and figured that at my gauge if I knit the pattern width for the XL size, and the length for the SM size that I would end up with what I need: a petite medium.

Hey Nessa - just a thought...are the 5 st per inch from the washed and blocked swatch or PRE washing and blocking? Your knitting is obviously not washed and blocked, so may be larger than it will end up after washing etc. Sandi from Knitting Daily has a post on this very issue: http://www.knittingdaily.com/posts/scarves_belts/271-1.html
