Well, I recently learned about WIP Wednesday (how many years have I been knit-blogging and I only *just* found out about it!?)

I actually learned to knit from online tutorials on a rainy day :-)
That was about 7 years ago.
This sweater uses very few different stitches, just knit, purl(backwards knit), and some increases and decreases.
I really reccomend knitting to everyone! It is soothing, and creative, and practical! If you lived in Victoria, I would harass you until you came to a knit nite with my knitting group, the bitchybees ;-)

This is my original bear design, I made some felt bears from this pattern I made a few years back. The other bears are a new design, with the fancy hinged arms and legs.
As for drops patterns, yes, sometimes the wording is strange. And you do need to read ahead, because it might say something like, "knit for 27cm", and then in the next line after you've knit the 27cm it might say, "at the same time, decrease every second row two sts". doh.
That said, I think if you stick to a pattern that loads of people have knit, then you can read their advice, and ask them any q's you might have, you'll be fine. As for gauge, my gauge was way off from pattern gauge, so I had to do some math & number crunching and ended up knitting the size XL stitch wise, size SM length wise, and ended up with a garment about size M. :-P This may be too annoying for you, but that's what I get for wanting to use a different yarn!
