Use what needle feels right. I would look for lessons first if you are just learning first though.

It depends on the yarn you've chosen to work with. A chunky yarn needs a larger needle than a fine yarn. Look at the wrapper for an indication and your pattern. There are lacey scarves with very fine yarn that require medium needles too, so following the pattern is key!
