ADMIN: Public shaming and banination

Nov 08, 2006 20:06

Well.

Someone has been very, very, very busy being an asshole.

Since thirdjane has been so busy, we've decided to relieve her of the burden of membership in knitting_snark.

Go be an asshole somewhere else. You're not welcome here.

11/15/06 EDIT: Since the link between the trolling asshole and thirdjane are tenuous at best, and because her friend heatherlayne_n has come to her defense, ( Read more... )

Oh dear. I'm afraid there has been a horrible horrible mistake. After several emails, when the mod (who I very much appreciate and who was perfectly kind and apologetic all the way through) told me who she thought had made those comments in my journal, I was utterly shocked. I've known thirdjane for about two years, on GreatestJournal.com before LJ, and none of that sounded anything like what I thought she would ever say. But the mod said she was the only person on my f-list who was also in this community, so I believed her and let her ban Jane. I shouldn't have done that, I should have gone with my gut instinct. I'm really sorry about that, Jane ( ... )

This is the way bannings are handled in this community. thirdjane should know that, as one of the requirements for membership is reading all of the admin posts. This serves the dual purpose of exposing those who break the rules and deterring others from acting like jerks. Therefore, in the context of the community, we don't consider this rude or without warning.

That's what I figured; it goes along with the feel or theme of the community, and I do think those who break the rules in such a way deserve this manner of banning. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm sorry Jane got banned unfairly, and I wish she would be added back since I, for one, believe that she did not make those comments. However, as I said, it is of course up to the mods and what they decide is true or not. Thanks for reading, though.

Do you log IPs on your journal? The mods may or may not be able to help figure out who the anonymous poster really is.

I think we should start a pool for how long it takes her to realize she's banned and removes knitting_snark from her profile. Last person took days.

I love the way the OP actually uses critical thinking skills, reads the user info, turns it against thirdjane and then follows through. Brava! It's like she and the person we snarked are two different people...

Damn, I was all excited for a moment that you caught the "You Snarked What" asshole.

That said... what the fuck? Seriously. I know if my if any of my IRL friends who're on knitting (other than jcipa, since she's a member here) got snarked, I'd go out of my way to make sure they didn't find out, they'd be so hurt...

I'm fairly sure she deserves to be banned, but is there some possiblity that someone has 2 journals?

Wouldn't the mods notice if there were posts coming from two users from the same IP address, though? Unless they're lurkers, I guess.

It sounds like the only evidence that the anonymous commenter is a actually an LJ friend of heatherlayne_n is the word of the anonymous commener him/herself. Doesn't that sort of undermine the trustworthiness of that information?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Hm.
