I'm surprised every time I see a pattern from that book knit up as the pictures in the book itself made me think they were all mostly rubbish. Here, yet again, I am most pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, I was mostly unimpressed with Folk Shawls, but when I see an example on Flickr, I think that maybe it's not as bad as I thought (although, I do hear the patterns aren't particularly exciting to knit).
Ditto to all this. A friend bought me Folk Shawls and I was extremely happy about the present, but I have yet to knit anything from it since everything looks kind of uninspiring. Nothing is shown off nicely in the book, but I do see an occasional FO that makes me drag it out and consider it.
Lovely work on your shawl, by the way! I'm very impressed :)
I wonder if it's not the yarn choice for the patterns in A Gathering of Lace? I know that's usually what seals a project for me, when I see someone else's version done in an exciting color. Because most of the time when I see a completed shawl from that book, it's in some wild and outrageous color (well, compared to offwhite), and looks stunning (or, at least, not like puckered ass).
I should really get a picture of me wearing that--it doesn't look nearly as much like underpants when worn. I never remember to take FO pictures beyond the "laying on the floor blocking" shot.
I think the problem is that a lot of the pictures in that book are somewhat "arty", such that you can't figure out what the darned thing actually looks like. Frost Flowers and Leaves is the worst offender-- ohsochewy and I were just talking about how fantastic Eunny's version is, and how from the pics in the book you can't even tell it's a square.
There are a lot of great patterns in there, though. I've done 3 or 4 things from it and have been really happy with all of them.
Yeah, the only reason I wanted to make FF&L when I first saw it is just because I like that Frost Flowers stich pattern. That was my first venture into googling for better pictures.
I have a Shetland Tea Shawl on the needles right now, making that my third project from that book. So far, I've been really happy with mine, too.

Eunny Jang's version of Frost Flowers and Leaves
tchemgrrl's version of Mediterranean Lace (which I thought was green, but is apparently gray)
Monica at Two Left Needles even made A Beginner's Triangle look exciting, but she hand-spun and dyed that yarn, so she's got an advantage.
This is why I do the google searches first: to see if the pattern really does look as good/bad as I think it does.
