Non-Halloween

It's Oct 31 here in the US, and that means Halloween. I don't dislike Halloween per se, but I hate costumes and dressing up and begging for candy. Luckily, this year my cantankerous son has decided to forego the ritual and so I can look forward to a nice, quiet evening in, or perhaps a rowdy evening out looking at the other ghouls ( Read more... )

I'm rather cynical about trick or treating because it's only been introduced in the last ten years or so and Halloween is clearly a commercial enterprise.

Hey, congrats on the beta thing - you have a good brain for that sort of thing, so that's excellent. :-)

Thanks! Coming from you, that's a huge compliment! Halloween is more fun out in LA than other places I've lived. People are very - well, theatrical is probably the best word for it. There are whole neighborhoods decorated, and thousands of people in all kinds of costumes, many quite elaborate. Very festive, actually. When I was growing up in a rural community in New England (northeastern US), it was frequently quite chilly in late October. We'd get on our costumes, then have to cover them with our winter coats and trudge around with flashlights and my mom to the few houses that had year-round residents. We'd whip off our jackets so they could see our costumes, then immediately put them back on. We'd be out for about an hour for maybe a half dozen houses, then come home and sort out our candy. Of course, in those days it was a treat to have candy, so we looked forward to the haul, even if it cost us some work to get it! (Except for the people who gave us the Bit O'Honeys, which I thought were just the worst because they had NO ( ... )
