Having hope and having the capacity to evaluate a situation from multiple perspectives are different things, and both are extremely contextual.

You sound so cynical in this post. I HOPE you watch the Shawshank Redemption again.

I have seen The Shawshank Redemption more times than you care to know. I know where you're coming from and yes, I sound a little cynical. I just have a problem with people bitching, that's all. It's one thing to have ambitions. It's another thing to have expectations that all too frequently get shot down.

Many people use hope as their escape from their current problems. In such uses, no action is taken by the person to assure that what they hope for actually materializes. "I hope I get in this school." "I hope I get the job." These are all comments from people who have abandoned activity for the passive response that hope calls for. Hope is when fate is removed from your hands and placed into someone else's. Therefore, you can only "hope" that their choice coincides with yours.

Hope can have a very positive effect on people though. While hope does not require action, it can result in action. A person's hope can manifest into a desire and then into motivation. It's all in how we hope that makes the difference. It depends on what actions we take to regain control of the situation. If hope motivates control and then action, it is good. But often, it only leads to complaints. I can hope for world peace, but as long as I sit here on my computer, it ain't happening.
