This looks beautiful! Ruth, I am happy to assist! ;) Or at least let me feel it to see the weight and how it flies.

D, did you treat the hemp to remove little sticks and woody parts? Or were you able to get pretty smooth hemp? (That is actually a reason ~not~ to use sisal or manila for something like this - or for rope bondage for that matter. It is my understanding that the little bits of those fibers can more easily work their way into skin and become infected.)

Thanks for the note. No - it is untreated hemp, but it is a very tight lay and surprisingly-soft when raw. I did wax the ends with beeswax to keep the strands from falling apart when striking something/someone. I also put figure-8 knots on the ends to keep the strands from coming unlayed ( ... )

I will take a look if Ruth has it tomorrow when I see her. I have made my own tools, including a very nice latigo/lace cat, and that one I had weighted the handle with an aluminum bolt. I figured out how to do a turk's head in the direction such that each time I threw it some of the force would tighten the structure, instead of loosening it, and it has served me well for 9+ years.

Another option for the handle other than the halfhitch wind-around would be a four-plait round braid (it seems you used 4 lines of rope at first) - the round braid could eithe rbe around a bolt or a stiffer piece of leather - some whips use twisted rawhide.
