Chapter Three: Minor Setbacks
The day of the ball arrived, and Tegoshi woke up bright and early, hoping that his stepfather would have his chores list prepared. He walked in the dining room to see his stepfather at the head of the huge oak table, reading a newsletter and drinking coffee.
"Good morning, stepfather," Tegoshi said, bowing.
"Good morning, Tegoshi-kun," Ninomiya replied.
"Do you have my chores list for the day?" Tegoshi asked.
Ninomiya smiled.
"As a matter of fact, I do," he replied. He pointed to the middle of the table and Tegoshi saw a tied up scroll. He opened it and felt his heart stop as he looked at it.
Ninomiya smiled.
"If you want to go to the ball," he began. "I suggest you get started now."
"Yes Ninomiya-san," Tegoshi said quietly.
"You may go now," Ninomiya said and Tegoshi nodded and exited.
It wasn't fair. Just when he was feeling happy about leaving the house, his stepfather decided to step on it. There was no way he'd finish all of these chores.
"I can't believe him," Tegoshi growled, "that evil bastard."
He sighed and decided to just accept it. He grabbed the mop and bucket and headed out in the backyard to the well to get some water. Yabu was out there taking a drink.
""What's wrong, Yuya?" he asked the older man."You should be happy! Aren't you going to Prince Yamashita's ball?"
"I was," Tegoshi muttered, filling the bucket. "Not now."
"Well why not?"
"Ninomiya-san gave me work to do," Tegoshi muttered, showing Tegoshi his list.
"That's not fair!" Yabu exclaimed. "He did that on purpose!"
"I know," Tegoshi sighed. "But there's nothing I can do about it. So, I'll just be working today."
Tegoshi took the bucket and mop and headed back into the house.
"Poor Yuya," Yabu muttered. "I wish there was something I could do."
A second later, he smiled.
"Well, maybe not just me," he said.

It was now seven forty-five and Kazuya, Jin, and Ninomiya were leaving for the ball.
"Well, be back at half past twelve," Ninomiya told Tegoshi. "This place better be spotless by then."
"Yes stepfather," Tegoshi replied quietly.
The three left and Tegoshi sighed, turning back to his list:
The following applies to the entire house:
Clean bathrooms
Wash windows
Scrub floors
Clean kitchen
Do the dishes
Dust banisters
Wash laundry
Clean attic
Clean basement
Polish shoes
Dust bookcases
So far, Tegoshi had completed five of the things on the list. And the others would take all night to do. The ball was out of the question.
He continued cleaning until 8:45pm and then took a break, sighing once more.
"If only I knew magic," he said. "Then I wouldn't be in this mess."
At that moment, the doorbell rang, and Tegoshi answered it to see Yabu, Masuda, Kato Shigeaki, and about twenty other people Tegoshi knew from in town.
"G-guys what -?"
"There's no time to explain!" Masuda told him, taking him by the wrist and leading him down the staircase. "The Ball has already been going on for about an hour. Go take a shower and get dressed!"
"But I have to work!" Tegoshi exclaimed, resisting.
"Don't worry about that!" Yabu exclaimed. 'We'll handle it! Where did you leave the list?"
"On the dining room table," Tegoshi replied. "But guys you don't have to -"
"GO!!!" the crowd yelled and Tegoshi laughed, running down the stairs.

Tegoshi quickly showered and washed his hair. However, upon stepping out of the tub, entering his room, and opening his closet, he gasped.
"Massu!" he exclaimed and Masuda came thundering down the stairs, Shigeaki behind him.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"My suit's gone!" Tegoshi exclaimed.
"Are you sure you didn't move it?" Masuda asked, panicking.
"I'm positive!" he exclaimed.
"Then Ninomiya-san must have taken it," Masuda replied. "What do we do now?"
Shigeaki however, didn't look the least bit worried.
"Good thing I came prepared," he said. "I'll be right back."
Minutes later, Shige returned with large, flat, rectangular gift box. He handed it to Tegoshi.
"'Put this on, he said.
"Thank you," Tegoshi said gratefully, and he headed into the bathroom. Seconds later, he let out a yell.
"Shige are you kidding me?!"
"Trust me," Shige told him. "Just put it on."
"Fine," Tegoshi muttered. "I don't really have a choice anyway."
Minutes later Tegoshi came out wearing an ocean blue ball gown with matching elbow length gloves.
"It's gorgeous!" Masuda exclaimed. "You even made added silver glitter Shige! He looks so pretty!"
"Stop gushing!" Tegoshi exclaimed, blushing. "I'm a guy for goodness sake."
"But you're a pretty guy," Shige replied, grinning. "And because of that, it fits you. You'll stand out and grab Prince Yamashita's attention."
"And King Takizawa will love you, so you'll already have a vote of approval," Masuda added.
Tegoshi sighed.
"Come on, it doesn't look bad I promise you," Shigeaki told him, pulling a brush out of his pocket and beginning to fuss with Tegoshi's hair. "Okay, now turn around."
Tegoshi did as he was instructed to and slowly turned. Shigeaki examined every inch of him to make sure the dress fit perfectly.
"It looks perfect," he said. Now come up stairs, there's one more thing I have to give you."
Tegoshi and Masuda followed Shigeaki up the stairs. Yabu and the townspeople gasped at Tegoshi.
"You look pretty," Yabu told him and Tegoshi blushed.
Shigeaki made Tegoshi sit down in a chair on the dining room and pulled out another box.
"I made these for you," he told him, opening the box and revealing a pair of clear shoes. "They made entirely of glass and they don't have heel, so you can move around in them easily."
Tegoshi smiled as he slid the shoes on.
"They're really comfortable," he said, hugging Shigeaki. "Thank you Shige. And thank you everyone for helping me."
"You don't have time to hug us," Yabu told him as Tegoshi glomped Masuda and now turned to him. "It's already 9:45pm, now come on!"
Yabu grabbed Tegoshi's wrist and led him out of the house, Shigeaki and Masuda on his heels. He stopped at the stable where there was a carriage waiting. He helped Tegoshi inside and then took hold of the reins.
On the journey there Tegoshi could barely breathe. He had never been this far away from his house. He had never been to social events. How could he get through this night? And what if Ninomiya, Kazuya, or Jin noticed him? He'd be embarrassed in front of the entire ball! And he'd be exposed as a mere poor boy with rags.
These thoughts continued to plague his mind until the carriage stopped in front of the large castle. Upon seeing it, Tegoshi almost fainted.
Yabu opened the carriage door to see Tegoshi's look of horror.
"Yuya, are you alright?" he whispered.
Shigeaki and Masuda looked at him. He was pale.
"I . . ." Tegoshi whispered. "I can't do this."
"But you can!" Masuda exclaimed. "We know you can!"
"You can't let Ninomiya-san win!" Shigeaki added.
"But I -"
"Shine, Yuya," Yabu told him. "Don't give up."
Tegoshi blinked.
"We're with you," Yabu continued. "Me, Shige, Massu, the townspeople, and your mother and father are all with you. With all of us supporting you, how can you lose? Go inside and give it your all, okay?"
Tegoshi nodded, fiercely blinking back the tears on his face as Shige, Masuda, and Yabu wrapped him into a hug. He took a deep breath and squeezed them back.
"Now," Yabu began, helping Tegoshi out of the carriage. "Get on in there. And be back out here before the twelfth strike of the clock for midnight, otherwise Ninomiya-san might be back before you."
"Okay," Tegoshi said. "I will."
With one last wave, Tegoshi headed up the stairs to the castle. He was greeted by an usher in the hall, who gawked at him.
"This way miss," he said, blushing.
'Great,' Tegoshi thought bitterly. 'Just great; he thinks I'm a girl!'
-Meanwhile In The Ballroom-
Prince Tomohisa sighed as he surveyed the ball room. He wasn't enjoying himself at all. This was like any other ball he had hosted or been to. No one interested him enough to the point where he wanted to get to know them. He knew his father meant well but, he wouldn't be able to choose a person to marry tonight.
Sitting next to him was his best friend Prince Nishikido Ryo from the kingdom nearby. Ryo was the only person he got along with because he let him do things at his own pace. However, he did give some advice that was a little blunt every now and then.
"I hope you don't plan to sit on your royal ass for the rest of the night," Prince Ryo whispered to Tomohisa. "Why don't you ask someone to dance, Tomohisa? Those two have been looking at you all night."
He inclined his head to the side of the room by the buffet table where Kazuya and Jin were. Tomohisa looked over to them and smiled which caused them to squeal and wave back. Ryo chuckled.
"They're cute," Ryo said to him grinning. "Go ask one of them to dance."
"They look like they giggle too much," Tomohisa replied. "And that's the last thing I need."
"You're picky for someone who's never had a significant other before," the Prince told him. "I think you might like one of them."
"You seem like you want them for yourself."
"They're not my type," Ryo replied. "I like guys who look like they eat. But don't let me discourage you."
"Trust me you're not," Tomohisa replied. "I wasn't going over there."
Ryo sighed.
"I don't know what they see in you," he said. "You're no fun at all."
"Thanks best friend."
"You're welcome," Ryo said with a smile.
At that moment the doors to the ball room opened and a woman wearing an ice blue ball gown stepped through them. Tomohisa felt the air catch in his throat. She - no he as he realized when the boy started to come closer to him - was gorgeous.
Prince Ryo smiled as he looked at Tomohisa, whose jaw was metaphorically inches from the floor.
"I think you've found your match, Tomohisa," he said, grinning.
