It's exactly midnight in California when Kibum's cell phone rings. He sees the name on the caller ID and smiles.
"Hello Kyuhyun."
"Hi. I'm sorry if I woke you, I'm not good with the whole time difference thing."
Kibum knows he's lying. Kyuhyun could probably tell him the time difference between Seoul and several other cities. But he decides to overlook it. After all, he's not complaining about the call.
"It's fine," he says and Kyuhyun feigns a sigh of relief.
"So how's California?"
"Great," Kibum replies. "I've been trying to learn how to surf."
Kyuhyun laughs and Kibum smiles at the sound. It's wonderful, and he's missed it in the past few weeks.
"What's with the chuckles?" he asks and Kyuhyun laughs a little more. "I was being serious."
"The image of you on a surfboard is quite amusing."
"Really? I would expect the image of me soaking wet from ocean water would excite you."
"You expect too much."
"Very funny Kyu."
"I'm glad you thought so. But in all seriousness, it's good to hear that you're doing well."
Kibum realizes that Kyuhyun has been worried about him, even if he won't say it. He's glad that the younger man's mind is now at ease.
"How about you?" he asks.
"I'm fine. A little tired from promotional activities but it's worth it."
"I've been watching the performances. You look great."
"I know."
Kibum chuckles.
"You've gotten bolder since the last time we spoke."
"I was always like this," Kyuhyun says. "You just…haven't been around to notice."
Kibum feels a little guilty upon hearing that statement. With the decision to focus on his acting career came consequences and the most vexing one was the lack of communication between him and the other members of Super Junior. He got in touch with Kyuhyun about five times a month maximum.
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Kibum," Kyuhyun says quietly, "when are you coming back home?"
Kibum knows that Kyuhyun doesn't just mean Korea.
"I don't know," he says and he knows that Kyuhyun's disappointment reflects his own. "But you'll wait for me right?"
He sounds calm but Kyuhyun hears the slight fear behind his voice. Kibum's uncertain of what he'll say. He doesn't like that.
"Of course I will you moron," he says. "Now get some sleep."
Kibum laughs as the doubt leaves his thoughts. He looks forward to seeing Kyuhyun again, whenever that may be.
"Goodnight Kyuhyun."
