The only thing that illuminates the room is the occasional bolt of lightning, and Lee Jinki gives an involuntary shiver every time he notices it pass through his living room curtains. He pulls his quilt tighter around his body and keeps his eyes on his television screen, watching a young male cautiously search an old house.
Jinkyung, is that you?
"Run Daehyun!" he yells through a mouthful of popcorn, though he knows that Daehyun can't hear him. Soon, the young male will discover that "Jinkyung" is actually a blood thirsty vampire, and his life will reach a tragic early end. Jinki feels the tension in the film building as a shadow taking the shape of a bat starts to slowly appear behind Daehyun, and he covers his eyes with his hands to shield himself from the sight -
Daehyun's scream and the doorbell of Jinki's home ringing occur simultaneously, and Jinki jumps a foot in the air and collapses on the carpet tangled in his quilt. The contents of his popcorn bowl scatter in all directions and he sighs at the wasted snack.
"Get a grip, Jinki," he mumbles, shaking the popcorn out of his hair. He pauses the movie, scrambles to his feet, and rushes to the door, ripping it open to see a tall man who looks to be in his early thirties.
"Hello?" he says as he stares curiously at the stranger.
"Good evening," the man replies blinking a few drops of water out of his eyes as he fishes through one of his coat pockets. "I was wondering if you could help me find this address. I think I'm on the right street, but it's hard to see in the rain."
He pulls out a damp sheet of paper and hands it to Jinki who manages to make out a few letters and numbers despite the smudged ink.
"That's the house across the street!" he exclaims and the stranger sighs in relief. "But no one lives there."
"Someone does now," the stranger says with a smile. "I'm moving in tonight, though I wish that I had picked a better day… I had no idea it was supposed to storm like this."
The stranger frowns and the action had a strong effect on Jinki for a reason that he can't quite explain.
"I can help you," he says.
"Oh no, that's not necessary!" the stranger exclaims quickly, waving a hand. "I don't want to take you away from your evening."
"I wasn't doing anything," Jinki says, as the image of his living room floor covered in popcorn comes to mind. "I'd love to help you!"
"Thank you," the stranger says, smiling. "I'm Mun Junghyuk by the way."
"Lee Jinki," Jinki replies, feeling a bit surprised at the way his pulse accelerated when he shook Junghyuk's hand. He freezes on his porch stairs for a few seconds before following Junghyuk out into the rain.
After a couple of hours both the job and the storm have ended, and the two sit on the porch of Jinki's house soaked from head to foot drinking sodas and finishing the remnants of Jinki's popcorn.
"Thank you so much for helping me," Junghyuk says. "I'm lucky to have such a kind neighbor."
"It was nothing," Jinki says embarrassed.
"Still I should repay the favor," Junghyuk says. "How about we do lunch one day, my treat?"
"I'd like that," Jinki says with a smile. His feels his face grows warmer and quickly takes a large gulp of his soda. "I'm alright," he adds through coughs and Junghyuk laughs.

It doesn't take Jinki long to notice that there are a few things that are…off about his new friend. The first sign is during their lunch outing, when Junghyuk orders an entire tray of sushi and sashimi. Jinki doesn't think he's seen so much raw food on one table in his entire life.
"Are you sure you won't get sick eating all of that?" he asks.
"I'll be alright," Junghyuk replies reassuringly as he separates his chopsticks. "I've never had a problem eating raw food before. But it is a pretty large plate for me to eat by myself. Do you want to try a piece?"
He extends a piece of mackerel to Jinki who takes a bite.
"It's good," Jinki says, covering his mouth both to hide the food he's chewing and his growing embarrassment as he realizes that he let someone who he just met two days ago feed him.
However, much to his relief, Junghyuk doesn't seem to notice his embarrassment as his attention is fully focused on his plate.
"Feel free to split it with me," Junghyuk says, and Jinki decides to take him up on the offer.

Jinki notices something else…off about Junghyuk during their trip to one of the farmer's markets in the country. It's a cloudy day and the October breeze makes Jinki cling to his shoulders. But despite the cold, he still has a bright on his face and enthusiastically shows Junghyuk everything in sight.
"This place is stocked all year with various foods, whether it's fruits or vegetables, or really delicious chicken or kettle corn. And the stand at the end has really good baked goods. You have to try their -"
He stops as he realizes that his audience has disappeared. He whips around, hoping to find Junghyuk in the packed crowd, but sighs in relief when he sees the older male looking at a table covered with canned fruits and jams.
"See anything that interests you?" he asks as he reaches him.
"One or two things," Junghyuk says smiling at Jinki before he picks up a jar of cherries and slowly turns it to see all of its angles. Jinki laughs.
"How can you even see anything with those shades on?" he asks. "It's not even sunny outside today."
"I can see what I want to see," Junghyuk says simply. He gives Jinki a smile, and the younger male feels his heart pounding rapidly against his chest.
"O-oh," Jinki says. "W-well that's g-great."
Junghyuk chuckles and goes back to looking at the jars, letting Jinki kick himself in peace.

The two don't see each other for another couple of weeks due to Junghyuk's hectic night shift schedule. The older male comes over to borrow tea, and Jinki is so caught up with the idea of keeping him around for a few moments that he agrees. However, he gets a sinking feeling as he looks through his pantry, for the requested item is difficult to find.
"I could have sworn that I had some in here," Jinki says frowning as he looks through the top shelf.
"Don't worry about it," Junghyuk says as he spots him on the stepping stool. "I can just go to the store."
"No I know I have some," Jinki says as he looks through the pantry with increased urgency. "I just refilled the jar I keep them in a week ago…here it is!"
Jinki removes the glass jar of tea from the back of the pantry and grins.
"I told you," he says doing a slight victory dance in the chair and Junghyuk laughs.
"Nice moves," he says and Jinki smiles as he takes his first step off of the stool. On his second step, the stool slides six inches across the floor, and he loses his balance completely. He yells as the jar flies out of his hands and braces himself to hit the kitchen tile when he feels an arm quickly wrap around his waist. He opens his eyes to see Junghyuk giving him a look of concern and holding the tea jar in his other hand.
"Are you alright?" Junghyuk asks.
Their proximity makes Jinki blush a dark shade of red, and he scrambles to stand on his own two feet.
"Yeah thanks," he says sheepishly. "I can be a bit of a klutz at times."
"You should be more careful," Junghyuk says sitting the jar on the table and taking out a packet of tea. "Thanks for the tea. I wish I could stay longer but my shift starts in a few hours and I'd better get ready. I'll call you?"
"Sure," Jinki says with smile as he walks him out. As he closes the door he hugs himself around his middle, wondering how Junghyuk reflexes got so sharp…and why it hurts so much to see him leave out the door.

A loud buzz fills the room and Jinki quickly throws out his hand to shut off his alarm clock. Junghyuk would be arriving in the next hour for their weekly jog around the neighborhood, and though Jinki knows he should be happy to have a friend who enjoys exercising - as he hadn't done so himself for three years - he doesn't understand why Junghyuk insists on exercising at five in the morning when the only light source that can be seen outside is the glow from the street lamps.
He reluctantly rolls out of bed, throws on a gray sweat-suit and makes himself a pot of coffee, yawning between sips. Soon the doorbell rings and he drags himself to it to see Junghyuk smiling with a water bottle in hand and wearing a black tank top and a pair of white shorts that compliment his figure extremely well.
"Ready?" Junghyuk asks and Jinki flushes as he realizes that he was staring for far too long.
"Yeah," he says all traces of exhaustion gone. He grabs his house keys and smiles. "Let's go."
Two hours later Jinki collapses on the porch stairs of his home, breathing hard. Junghyuk, who is still standing, gives him an apologetic look.
"Perhaps I shouldn't have pushed you so hard," he says and Jinki quickly shakes his head.
"No…I was grateful for it," he replies as he slowly catches his breath. "I'm out of shape right now, but I'll get used to it, I promise."
"Alright then I'll make sure we keep this pace," Junghyuk says as he hands Jinki his water bottle. Jinki smiles gratefully and takes a few gulps before handing it back.
"Thank you," he says. "So, same time next week?"
"It's a date," Junghyuk says with a smile.
"Speaking of dates…what are you doing tomorrow night?"
Junghyuk raises an eyebrow as Jinki flushes.
"Nothing," he says. "Why?"
"It's a silly ritual," Jinki begins, "but I marathon movies for Halloween. I've done so for years, but it would be more fun if I had someone with me. What do you say?"
"I'm in," Junghyuk says with a bright smile, and Jinki holds back a triumph cheer as he smiles back.

Despite the raging storm outside, Jinki combs through his DVD collection with a bright smile on his face as he decides which videos to use for the Halloween Marathon. He pulls out House of Wax, Darkness Falls, The Birds, Scream, The Lost Boys -
Jinki freezes, and stares at The Lost Boys DVD cover. He knows the storyline well. A kid has an older brother that gets turned into a vampire. On the first day after being turned the brother wore shades because the sun hurt his eyes. Jinki suddenly remembers Junghyuk wearing shades to the farmer's market despite the fact that the sun was barely visible through the clouds that day.
And Junghyuk had done other strange things too, Jinki thinks, getting a sinking feeling in his stomach. He ate raw food too often, his reflexes were far too quick, and every time he was around Jinki became a stuttering, blushing, slightly aroused mess. There was only one possible reason for all of this.
"He's…a vampire?" Jinki asks himself.
There's a loud boom of thunder outside and Jinki jumps as a chill goes down his spine.
"What am I going to do now?" he whines, panic creeping into his voice.
The doorbell rings and he jumps once more. A bolt of lightning strikes as he answers it to reveal a fully cloaked figure.
"I vant to suck your blood," the figure says and the color drains from Jinki face.
"Don't eat me!" he screams and the figure laughs and removes his cloak from his face.
"Calm down, Jinki," Junghyuk says grinning and Jinki feels uneasy as he sees the fangs in his mouth. "I just thought I'd dress for the occasion and this was the cheapest costume at the store."
Jinki lets out a shaky laugh as he takes in Junghyuk's outfit, a black Victorian style suit, cloak, and top hat with a dark purple vest and cane. He looks quite handsome in it, and Jinki berates himself for staring.
"It's great," he says and Junghyuk smiles, satisfied.
"I brought the sashimi," he says, holding up a plastic bag. "Should I just put it in the kitchen?"
"Yeah," Jinki says. "I mean no - I just - put on the blanket in the living room."
"Okay…" Junghyuk says raising an eyebrow as he enters the living room. "You know you get spooked too easily. Maybe a scary movie night on Halloween isn't the best idea."
"I'm fine," Jinki says quickly. "The storm is freaking me out little, that's all. So, which movie should we start with?"
"I'll be fine with anything you pick," Junghyuk says with a smile and Jinki feels his hormones betray him once again as he feel butterflies in his stomach at Junghyuk's generosity.
Stay focused, Jinki, he tells himself. You need to observe him for a few hours.
"Alright then," he says sitting on the blanket and Junghyuk sits next to him. "Let's get started."
Jinki decides to turn his Halloween Movie Night strictly into a Vampire Movie Night, hoping to see Junghyuk's reaction to the choice. He starts with 30 Days of Night, an hour and a half of slaughtering vampires and follows that with The Lost Boys, which also features brutal scenes of vampires being murdered. Throughout the movies Jinki steals glances at Junghyuk, who remains impassive.
He must know that I'm on to him, Jinki thinks. I'll try a different tactic.
He switches to The Twilight Saga, hoping that its vampire and human love story and a theme of good versus evil will help Junghyuk feel more at ease about revealing himself.
"You sure do have a lot of vampire movies," Junghyuk comments halfway into the movie.
"I like vampires," Jinki says with a casual grin and he raises an eyebrow as Junghyuk blushes slightly at the statement. It's the first time that he's ever seen the older man look anything other than confident and the action makes him alert.
"Jinki," he begins, uneasily. "There's something that I've been meaning to tell you."
"Yes?" Jinki says cautiously. "What is it?
"Well I - I just -"
Jinki's eyes widen as Junghyuk starts wringing his hands and he jumps off of the floor.
"I knew it!" he yells. "I knew it!"
"You did?" Junghyuk says, surprised. He then sighs. "I was too obvious wasn't I?"
"Of course you were!" Jinki exclaims. "I can't believe you thought that I wouldn't notice!"
"Well you might as well hear it from me anyway. Jinki I -"
"- you're a vampire!"
There's silence in the room and Junghyuk gives Jinki an incredulous expression.
"What?" he asks in disbelief. "You think I'm a vampire?"
"I know that you're a vampire!" Jinki exclaims.
"Jinki, I'm not a vampire," Junghyuk says baffled at the sheer look of horror on Jinki's face. "I just wanted to say that -"
"- oh come on do you think I'm going to believe you?" Jinki says with a snort. "All of the signs are there!"
"What signs?" Junghyuk asks exasperatedly.
"You wear sunglasses on cloudy days for starters," Jinki points out.
"I have sensitive eyes," Junghyuk explains.
"Sure you do," Jinki says rolling his eyes. "What about the fact that you're always eating sushi or sashimi?"
"I told you, I was trying to change my diet," Junghyuk replies. "And the last time I checked that doesn't make me a supernatural creature."
"What about your fast reflexes?" Jinki says unfazed by Junghyuk's previous explanations.
"I box regularly," Junghyuk says folding his arms across his chest.
"And your night shift?"
"I'm not a morning person."
"And the fangs that I've seen everytime you've talked tonight?" Jinki says and Junghyuk rolls his eyes and takes them out.
"Fake," he says twirling them around his index finger. "Now is there anything other evidence?"
"Explain the fact that my hormones started raging after I met you," Jinki says. "I know you're using your vampire seductive powers on me!"
Junghyuk chuckles.
"I can't help that I'm attractive and you seem to have fallen for me," he says and Jinki flushes.
"What was it that you wanted to tell me then?" he asks defensively.
"That was I was interested in you and I wanted to know if you wanted to start seeing me," Junghyuk replies simply.
There's another silence in the room as Jinki begins to slowly comprehend the situation.
"Oh," he says going a dark shade of red. "Oh."
Junghyuk stares at him for a few seconds before bursting into a fit of laughter, clutching his sides for support.
"I -" he chokes out. "I - can't believe t-that you - that you thought that - that I was a - a - a vampire!"
He rolls over on the blanket and Jinki covers his face with his hand.
"That's just so - it's just so -"
"Stupid?" Jinki mumbles through his fingers. "Ridiculous? Moronic?"
"No," Junghyuk says as he gets himself together. "It's…kind of cute."
Jinki blinks in disbelief.
"So you don't think I'm an idiot?" he asks skeptically.
"Oh no I definitely think you're an idiot," Junghyuk says as he gets to his feet.
"That's fair," Jinki says, frowning.
"But look on the bright side," Junghyuk says, walking towards Jinki and Jinki stays rooted to the spot when Junghyuk stops in front of him. "My feelings haven't changed."
He leans in and presses his lips against Jinki's, and Jinki responds by wrapping his arms around Junghyuk's neck and pulling himself up so that he can lock his legs around his hips. Junghyuk groans and slides his tongue in Jinki's mouth to deepen the kiss.
"Well," Junghyuk says when they catch their breath. "What do you think of my human seduction techniques?"
"I think they're better than the vampire ones," Jinki replies feeling a bit lightheaded and Junghyuk laughs.
"Good to know," he says, grinning and closing the distance in between them once more.
