Unicorn/Amalthea first begins her journey because she hears a rumor that she is the last unicorn. At first she doesn’t believe it because it is man saying it. However, when a butterfly confirms this she decides to confirm this for herself. At first she thinks that it is only that men cannot see her kind since the age of magic and belief has seemed to pass. She travels for an entire year by herself trying to find others like her to no avail. However she does not lose faith in that she will find her own kind. She knows she must travel to the end of all roads for the butterfly told her for that is where the red bull chased her kind. And while butterflies only generally know songs and poetries, this one knew some truth.
One night while she was asleep Mommy Fortuna, her son and the magician Schmendrik happen upon her and put her in a cage. Mommy Fortuna is a witch though others claimed she could not do real magic. Her sideshow of "mythical creatures" is all just illusions with the exception of the Unicorn and the Harpy Celaeno. The Unicorn was stuck in this show for a few days but Schmendrik the magician set her free. Schmendrik actually can see her (much like Mommy Fortuna could but her son couldn’t). It is from Mommy Fortuna that the Unicorn found out King Haggard was the one who had imprisoned all the unicorns with the help of the Red Bull. Schmendrik eventually frees her. The Unicorn, in payment allowed him to ask for something from her and if she could fulfill it, he could have it. He asked to accompany her on her journey since she could not make him a true magician.
As they journeyed on, they met Captain Cully and his band. Schmendrik was actually captured by the band while the Unicorn was able to hide. Since she had told Schmendrik he could go through the journey with her, she had to find a way to free him. Well, Schmendrik freed himself… somewhat. He caused an illusion of Robin Hood and his band of merry men to appear and Cully’s men and wife went off to join them. During the chaos Schmendrik tried to escape. He met back up with Unicorn only to have Molly - Cully’s wife - come upon them. At seeing Unicorn, Molly demanded to go with them since she had wanted to be around a unicorn ever since she was a maiden.
Once again they started to travel towards the end of all roads and King Haggard’s castle. As they neared it, the Red Bull sensed the Unicorn nearby and went to go get her. To save her, Schmendrik once again performed magic and turned her into a human. The unicorn despised it. She could now feel her body dying around her, something she had never felt before. But, as a human, the red bull had no interest in her and thus left her alone. No longer the Unicorn but now Lady Amalthea, they continued towards Haggard’s castle. There she met King Haggard and Prince Lir, his adopted son. But Amalthea felt a deep connection to the sea. Schmendrik got them to stay in the castle by being Haggard’s court magician and Molly as the castle cook. Amalthea spent most of her days looking out at the sea.
However, being a human was taking its toll on the Unicorn within the Woman. She fell in love with Lir and no longer desired to save the other unicorns and just live out her days with him as a human. Lir - however - acknowledging that he was the hero, insisted she return to being a unicorn to save the others. Once returned to the form of a unicorn, the red bull started to hunt her. She nearly lost as well until Lir stepped in. Lir was knocked unconscious by the red bull and driven by her anger and love for him, Unicorn fought back and drove the Red Bull into the sea. Once in the sea and no longer preventing the other unicorns from escaping, all the unicorns ran out of the sea and back into the world amongst men.
Unicorn lingered however. She now was like no other unicorn in existence for she knew regret among other emotions that were not normal to other unicorns. And she still deeply loved Lir. But even as she knew human emotions such as love and regret, the Unicorn knew she needed to leave and return to her forest. She parted ways with Schmendrik, Molly, and Lir. She would remember them long after they were gone.
[Personality]
Unicorn does not feel dark emotions very deeply or really at all. She feels some sadness but she unable to them in great quantities for she is a pure mythical creature. It is because of this inability to feel pointlessness and despair that allowed her to look for an entire year for the other unicorns. She does not really feel any regret if she has to kill or if others kill around her. To her that’s simply how things are. Unicorn is very much aware that you cannot stop someone from being who or what they are. She is very much accepting of what happens around her if it is nature’s doing. She does not hate man or creatures that would wish to potentially hurt or kill her. She cannot hate for one but she also knows that it is in their nature to be flawed and do what they do. She is greatly surprised when she discovers man has forgotten her kind but accepts it as a course of nature.
After turning into a woman and then BACK into the unicorn, Unicorn feels things a unicorn should never know. She knows regret and sadness and even hatred. But even knowing this as she does they are still in much lesser degrees than a normal human. She still has a deep love for Lir (and only Lir) and regrets being apart from him although this is not known to anyone other than herself. Like she can now feel regret, remorse, and other darker emotions, she can now feel brighter emotions in much higher quantities than before. Once being turned back into a unicorn, she has a greater sympathy for humans (maidens more than others) and the things they must endure. She is even more understanding of them not believing in her and her kind. The difference being that before she could only accept that man forgot her kind, but now she can actually understand why they were able to forget since she herself was very willing to forget the others in favor of staying with Lir.
Unicorn is a very calm creature, even after being turned into a human and accepting of all things. Her calm and tranquil nature is generally misunderstood as sadness and depression. But even after being turned into a woman, the Unicorn while able to feel the emotions deeper than the other unicorns, she cannot feel it as deeply as humans do. She does find enjoyment in simple things like meeting new creatures and being around maidens. She also is very protective of those she cares for such as her animals in her forest and Lir and Molly. Unicorn will be very affectionate to maidens and children (of either gender) since they are deep believers of her kind and are pure. She is respectful to other mythical creatures’ - even humanoid ones because they are similar to her so long as they seek to do her no harm. She has vast patience even after being turned into a human.
She is a very quiet and private creature, preferring the company of the creatures of her forest than anything else. She does seek out maidens when she senses them near but in general she keeps to herself.
[Specialties/Abilities]
She can speak several languages be it to animals or humans. As a unicorn her horn is able to heal any wound but is also a very deadly weapon against magical creatures and weapons alike. She cannot prevent magic from being cast on her if she is unaware, however if she is awake and on guard the spell will be ineffective. She can burn through metal with her horn and see through illusions if she concentrates. The Unicorn cannot be captured by any rope other than golden rope if she is on her guard.
She runs much faster than a normal horse but it is not super speed. She can actually undo magical spells if she wishes. She will not die from old age or natural causes though she is able to get sick and be killed. Unicorn will try to avoid killing but that doesn’t mean she won’t kill at all. In a very loss sense, she can sense when a maiden is nearby and is capable of telling who is and isn’t a virgin.
If you actually succeed in capturing her, and then set her free, she will grant you any wish within her capacity of granting.
Since it varies from culture to culture on who can see a unicorn, the rules to seeing this Unicorn are pretty simple and allows for a lot of people to see her. Those who can see her are:
- Animals
- Mythical Creatures (humanoid or otherwise)
- Maidens and children
- Those with magical powers (of any sort)
- Deep believers OF magic even if the other things aren't met.
Unicorn does not enjoy the touch of men since they are "impure." However the touch of maidens and children is soothing to her. And as a unicorn, there is no mythical creature purer than her. She is all that is pure.
Those who CAN'T see her will just see a pretty white mare.
