Movie thoughts: Thoughtcrimes (2003) [giant pic spam!]

Aug 27, 2006 23:20

I just finished watching Thoughtcrimes today because earlier today I read a review of it at autumn_whispers' journal and saw that it features Joe Flanigan who plays John Sheppard in Stargate Atlantis. *hee!* :) Obtainable here

*shakes a paw at autumn_whispers*

I never would have watched this if it wasn't for her review because while I like Sheppard, I have no feelings for the actor, but gosh this movie was soooooo good. Lots of types of awesome :)

Plot Synopsis: Freya McAllister suddenly starts hearing voices in her head on the night of her High School Prom. From then on her future ends and she is diagnosed as a violent schizophrenic and committed to a mental hospital where she spends the next eight years of her life, supposedly with a severe mental illness. One day, Dr Michael Welles arrives and Freya discovers that she is not mentally ill, that the voices in her head are real and that they are the thoughts of everyone around her. He teaches her to turn her telepathic powers into a powerful gift. What he doesn't tell her is that he works for the National Security Agency... This film was the pilot for a TV series that never materialised.

As soon as I started watching I realised that Freya McAllister is played by Navi Rawat, the very beautiful American actress of Indian and German descent who plays the doctorate student Dr Amita Ramanujan on Numb3rs who helps out Professor Charlie Eppes from time to time.

autumn_whisper has a very detailed review at her journal that sets out the storyline. I prefer to concentrate on the shallow in this pic spam ;)

Freya is a 'normal' young girl preparing for her prom. On the night of the prom, she is suddenly bombarded with voices - the thoughts of everyone around her.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic, she is hospitalised for the next 8 years of her life. She discovers that she is able to shut out the voices to some extent by reading, although such is the intensity of the barrage that if she is still not able to communicate with the outside world because when she ceases reading - the voices begin again.

Meanwhile, Freya's elder sister June is left alone to deal with the death of their father and to cope with what is happening to her sister.

Freya becomes a ward of the state and a lost soul until one day, Dr Michael Welles comes to the hospital.

Freya is tranquilised and taken away ...

When she awakens, she discovers that for the first time in many years the voices are gone. Welles explains that she is a telepath - able to read the minds of others. It takes some time for him to overcome her wariness, but she grows to trust him and to accept his teaching as he is able to teach her to use her abilities.

All the staff at the cottage, Welles included, have the ability to 'block' their thoughts meaning that they are able to train Freya in how to focus her abilities. It is not an easy process though.

We then discover that Welles works for the NSA who is funding his research. Although he believes that Freya is not yet ready, they need her assistant urgently. The first encounter does not go well as a mistrustful Freya flees - plucking security codes from the minds of agents to open locked doors and anticipate their actions. Navi Rawat is beautiful - an intelligent-looking Jessica Alba.

She goes to find her sister who is now a public defender but appears to want little to do with the sister who has caused her so much grief.

On her own, the voices overwhelming her again, Freya is rescued by Welles once again and she co-operates with the NSA. A man lies in a coma. He has information about a planned assassination attempt on an important government official.

She is then teamed up with the NSA field agent heading the investigation - Brendan Dean (Joe Flanigan). Unfortunately, she is forbidden to tell him about her abilities which makes life slightly awkward.

Brendan is very unthrilled about being paired up with this 'observer' but has no choice but to obey. Their first encounter is hliarious - although only click if you don't mind spoilers :P

The second half of the film is my favourite because it deals with Freya and Brendan as they hunt down a mysterious and elusive assassin known as Gazal.

They are an awesome combination. She's serious and earnest, he has a photographic memory and is kind of bumbling despite being super smart. I know that autumn_whispers says that it's not really about them romantically and in the movie, Brendan is ostensibly more interested in Freya's sister ....

....but Freya and Brendan are totally kick ass together. They have chemistry and are both super cute.

I will now dispense with any attempt to review this movie and enter Shameless Pic Spam section :) Know only that it is Very Awesome and I enjoyed it prodigiously! :)

They're so cute together.

Eek, so cute! :)

Still cute! Alas, Joe Flanigan looks funny when he runs .... :) He runs like a girl! Hee!

OK, I've gone out of control with the screen caps, but here's the last set 'cause did I mention - they're soooo cute together ;) I love the frown Brendan gets on his face when he thinks that Freya might have gone out on a date. *choke*

Gah. Soooo good.

Unfortunately "Thought Crimes" never became a series. *sigh* Well there's always fan fic, right? *eyeballs autumn_whispers meaningfully*

You can buy the dvd here or if anyone would like to see it more urgently, email me at koalathebear at livejournal . com :) I want more people to see this because I need to talk about it!!!! I also want to read fan fic like now!!!! :) Yes. It. Is. All. About. Me. ;)
