from my home renovation and construction experience last summer, reinsulating, sheetrocking, laying slab, floating wood floor, wiring, etc. is a lot of tedious hard work and is incredibly costly to boot -- even just for supply alone. (more so if you don't have approval from the city and you're modifying a structure which isn't properly zoned or isn't meeting the prerequsites for construction). i would recommend finding a cheap house or something, instead.

I was listening to Pete Yorn's "Life on a Chain" on my way to work yesterday and thought of you. That song is you.
Good luck with your renovations, your bare-handed constructions--you will need to take pictures and post them on your website on in your journal.
Miss you too.
