[News/Religion] Episcopal Church asks bishop to resign over alleged sex abuse cover-up.

Sep 23, 2010 16:07

So a bishop allegedly covered up sexual abuse by his brother thirty years ago and now that it's out, the Episcopal Church wants the guy out (canNOT say I blame them). He doesn't seem too interested in the idea - instead there's a quote about the pain HE'S endured since it all came out - typical martyr shit ( Read more... )

The Church has a long (centuries long, in the case of the Anglicans, Millenia long in the case of the RCC) of having their own internal courts to deal with internal issues. It dates back to times when the Church was essentially the only functioning legal entity around.

In this case, it appears that the bishop in question was tried and convicted in Ecclesiatical courts, but the conviction was thrown out on appeal (essentially, the statute of limitations had passed). Hence the only legal recourse within the Church is to encourage his voluntary resignation.

Yeah - we'd all get our turn.

Honestly? Even though Southern Baptist is full of crazed people who want to shove their religion down others' throats too much because they misinterpreted the whole "Deny me and I'll deny you" part of the bible... I got to say that's the one thing I like about it. If you're gunna diddle with a kid they usually run your ass up the highest pole.

Well, that is so long as your Family doesn't control the Church, etc.
