It sends you a notification when you have a message, but if you'd left your notification address as something you also don't check, or if the spamtraps get it, that doesn't help.
Here is the explanation of your "username@livejournal.com" email address. Whatever address you get your regular LJ notifications (such as someone replying to a post) sent to, the email will also get forwarded to that address. I would guess that maybe fifteen messages out of the whole pile are actual communications from real people; the rest are spam.
I'm more than a little surprised that I haven't gotten any spam sent to me that way, ever. (Or maybe I have. All my various email addresses auto-forward to one main one, and most of the time I don't bother to check which one any given spam message was originally sent to.)
I'm excellent; just had my last reconstructive surgery on Tuesday, getting the bandages off in an hour. Also managed to pass stats, so I'm enjoying my winter break knowing I don't have to repeat anything next quarter. ^_^ How are you? We haven't chatted in an Age of Man!
