Summary: It was a birthday that Yamamoto did not want to spend.
Compared to the flashy display of explosion associated with the storm guardian's dynamite attacks, it was when he was playing the piano when he attracts the most attention. However, it was a rare sight that even for them members of the Vongola family. It was during the commemoration of Tsuna's fifth year as Vongola the tenth when Gokudera had his first public performance as an adult, playing a song he self-composed and dedicated to Tsuna. He was reluctant at first, but after the third 'please' from Tsuna, he caved. Afterall, who was he to deny the Tenth from his wishes. Despite claiming to be rusty and nervous, the performance was flawless. He looked almost surreal; his mid-length hair moved, catching the light that was shone upon him. Brows creasing from concentration as long fingers danced gracefully on the black and white surface. For that moment, many of the guests forgot that he was the bad-tempered storm guardian of Vongola as he radiated the air of an artist, and many wished to have another chance in seeing him play.
Yamamoto was jealous.
His fingers ran over the keys of the grand piano that stood in the lounge room of their villa. Over the years, the handful of times Gokudera played publicly, there was never once it was played for him. He assumed that Gokudera practices when he was out for assignmentss as he had never seen him played, even in private. As the servants busied themselves completing the final preparation for his birthday party tomorrow, he was not looking forward to it. Gokudera was away; his assignment was delayed as their "business partner" backed out from the deal at the last minute, and the silver haired man had to extend his stay in order to persuade the man into complying.
The party was a small one, nothing like the big celebration held in the Vongola mansion for Tsuna's birthday. Only family and close allied family members were invited. Keeping Enzio away from any source of water, Dino followed closely by Romario, approached Yamamoto and offered him a toast. The blond watched the Japanese man return the well wishes of others before him with a strained smile before turning his head to look at the empty piano a distance away. He gave the younger man a comforting pat on the back when the lights in the hall suddenly dimmed. The chatter of the room was immediately silenced when the first crisp note was heard from the direction of the grand piano. Yamamoto felt like he had lost the ability to breathe when he saw his lover sitting on the bench, dressed in a dark suit, his eyes closed as his fingers glided across the keys.
"Hayato......" Yamamoto found himself unable to express the depth of feeling he felt seeing him play.
It was late into the night when they finally sent the remaining guests off. A sense of serenity returned to the villa as Gokudera collapsed into a boneless heap onto the lounge suite away from the main hall, yawning.
"Hayato..." Yamamoto gathered the shorter man into his arm as he sat down alongside, trying to make up for the lost days. "...When did you return?" he asked as he ran his fingers through the silver hair.
"Hm...just..." Taking a moment longer than normal to process the question, Gokudera shifted into a more comfortable position as he half-heartedly tried to bat away the hand playing with his hair before muttering a barely audible answer. His eyelids felt heavy, threatening to shut on the emerald green eyes as the steady rhythm of Yamamoto's heartbeat lured him towards sleep.
Seeing the state of exhaustion his lover was in, Yamamoto carried the shorter man, frowning at how weightless he felt in his arms. On the way to their bedroom, he mused about how Gokudera managed to pull through the function in this state, and where he had gotten the energy to perform. In his
opinion, that was the best performance he had seen, and he believed that the moment and the melody would forever be etched in his memory. Stealing a quick kiss before making his way to the bathroom, Yamamoto fancied having a long soak in the tub, a reward for the year that had passed. The door of the bathroom opened as he was feeling the tension in his muscles melt away. Gokudera walked in groggily, his white shirt untucked as he loosened the tie around his neck, the suit discarded on the floor of the bedroom.
"You are taking too long." Gokudera grumbled as he made quick work of his clothes, joining Yamamoto in the tub that did not at all seem cramped with two people inside. They enjoyed each other's company in silence until Yamamoto gave a light smack on his forehead, as if punishing himself for forgetting something very important. "Hayato! My present!" he demanded, mustering the best puppy look he could. The swordsman received a splash of lukewarm water in return as Gokudera rolled his eyes. In normal circumstances, he would have stormed out and might even return with a couple of ticks of dynamite to blow the Rain guardian up. However, he was too tired for this tonight.
Undismayed, Yamamoto moved closer, planting kisses from the exposed neck down to the collar bone,
"I missed you." He breathed out those words by the silver haired man's ear, tongue tracing the outline of the ear before tugging gently at the soft earlobe. He could feel the sharp intake of air from his partner, as he reached out to cup his face with his hands before pulling in for a kiss. The kiss left both guardians breathless, as their bodies felt warmer than the water surrounding them. Yamamoto's finger gently tucked the stray strand of hair that had fallen out of place. Noticing the dark circle evident under the storm guardian's eyes, he let out a sigh. "You should rest." He said, as he got out of the tub. Gokudera raised an eyebrow but said nothing as he followed suit.
A piece of folded paper that had seen better days lay on their bed. Noticing that Gokudera was still toweling himself dry, Yamamoto picked it up and unfolded it careful, as if afraid that the paper would crumple at mere touch. Notes that Yamamoto would never hope to understand were written on it. It was a music score. On the top right hand corner, the words 'For You', which he recognized as Gokudera's handwriting, was written in Japanese. When it dawned upon him the piece played tonight was self-composed, he was overwhelmed with emotion.Yamamoto pulled Gokudera into a crashing embrace as he was walking over to his side of the bed.
"Oi! I can't breathe!" the slighter man protested half-heartedly as he found himself missing these quiet intimate moments during the three weeks that he was away. Furthermore, he could not summon up the energy to push the other man away. That night they slept in each other's arm, no wild sex or hot kisses, just the plain contentment was enough to make the bliss overflow.
