Unless your Masters was *about* two-dimensional electron gas, there's no call to get depressed over it.
If this is a subject you actually want to know more about, find someone to talk it over with. I found post-lecture discussions with classmates pretty essential for understanding throughout my (Bachelors) degree.
Or just nod and fake it ;)

two-dimensional electron gas is such a basic concept in condensed matter physics that it would be shameful to admit you didn't understand it. Almost EVERYTHING is about 2D electron gas. In any event, this was not what I didn't understand.
