In 1970 my friend Tom Olds and I anticipated the future by creating mashups of song lyrics and anything else we felt like citing from the horizon. I'm reminded of this 'cause RockCritics.com just reposted an extraordinarily fun Phil Dellio piece from the late '90s on the art of the double bill; as Phil says in a comment, double bills were ( Read more... )

Finally! Been locked out of LJ for a while now. Thanks for the link -- had a longer post about a film festival I put together for a chat show I was on that got gobbled up several weeks ago, iirc.

I find Spotify is a very imperfect tool for putting together a *mix* as opposed to a playlist -- I don't think it's quite comparable to the sort of juxtaposition and serendipity you find in repertory programming or even in making a mixtape (although you CAN use it for this purpose, I tend to have less success and usually end up burning CDs anyway). But playlists are very good for discovery so that you might then *make* something that emphasizes juxtaposition. (The poll is an interesting one -- the "suggestions boxes" are pure unwieldy playlist, but the poll itself has lots of that programming/juxtaposition element to it.)

I think my YouTube playlists work very well as mixtapes, though you won't get to appreciate all my segues unless you've got an adblocker or subscribe to YouTube premium. (And I have to keep tabs on my playlists and update whenever a vid goes private or gets removed; and only my Eardrums and Year Mixes (e.g., "Mother Didn't Want You But You Were Still Born (2001 emerging)" and Themed playlists are meant to flow as mixtapes; the Top Singles OF A Year and Top Nonsingles Of A Year are simply in order of preference.)
