About a month ago I accidentally ran into a Twitter film poll of top ten westerns and I thought “Why not?” and this is what I posted:

The Searchers
Two Road Together
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Red River
The Wild Bunch
For A Few Dollars More
Day Of The Outlaw
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Seven Men From Now
I Shot Jesse James

Here're the results. Kudos for Monte Hellman at 55. (Might make my Top 20.)

A number on the results list I don't think of as westerns: e.g., Treasure of Sierra Madre, Dead Man, Django Unchained. The latter is a southern, not a western, even if it's obviously indebted to the spaghettis. (Though Guns Along The Mohawk is a western and it's set in New York State. Deservedly not on the list, but has one of my favorite bits of momentary John Ford nonsense, where a preacher declares, in stern admonition and horror, "I hear that some of you girls have been seen dating... [pause]... boys from Vermont!" Then resumes his announcements with reports of Indian warriors gathering.)
