Taiyaki is basically a waffle with bean paste or something sweet inside.
Recently they have taken to putting salty things in there like cheese and curry. My favorite is still custard taiyaki and the ice cream taiyaki

My favorite kind is also custard taiyaki. I liked the green tea ice cream taiyaki that I got from a Japanese store when I was in Atlanta. As for the salty things... how recent do you mean by "recently"? I had salty ones more than 20 years ago, though not in Japan, obviously. I think even Little Tokyo in L.A. has had salty ones for a while, or I could be hallucinating about that. Now, if only dorayaki had the salty type... *_*

they like never ever served the salty ones when I was in Japan. I even tried lookign for a cheese one to try but no luck.
