01. pepperochino pasta

“You know, it's really not an easy dish to make.” Tsubasa comments as he unpacks the bell peppers from the grocery bag, setting them down beside handmade pasta wrapped in brown paper.

Takki looks up from rifling through his drawer for a chopping board and shrugs. “How hard can it be? You certainly made it look simple enough.”

Tsubasa raises an eyebrow and decides not to mention his vastly superior cooking skills at this point - there will be plenty of opportunities to remind Takki of that throughout the whole experience, that he is sure. Moving briskly, he hands Takki a few cloves of garlic. “Chop these finely, please.”

Takki nods and sets his knife to the garlic, chopping in fast precise strokes, feeling rather proud of himself until he hears Tsubasa's shriek.

“You're supposed to peel the garlic before chopping them!”

“Am I?” Takki stares at the white bits of garlic peel clinging to minute pieces of chopped garlic on his chopping board. “Oops.”

Tsubasa groans. “Hide-kun...just...go somewhere and play. Or something. I'll have pepperochino pasta ready for you in half an hour.”

“No! I want to learn how to make it myself! Pleaseeee?” Takki wheedles, looking at Tsubasa with wide, pleading eyes (one thing he has learnt from Tsubasa himself).

Tsubasa relents, sighing. “All right, slice the peppers and I'll prepare the herbs, then I'll teach you how to combine the sauce.”

Takki selects a nice, big pepper and no sooner after he cuts the pepper into half...

“AH-CHOO! AHH-CHOOOO!”

Horrified, Tsubasa whips the peppers out of the range of Takizawa-germs, as Takki goes into a huge coughing and sneezing fit, nose reddening and eyes watering.

“AH-CHOO!! COUGH!! AH-CHOOOO!!!”

Shaking his head, Tsubasa leads the sneezing, coughing and hacking Takki out of the kitchen.

~

“But how can you be allergic to raw bell peppers when you inhale pepperochino pasta like a bulldozer?” Yamapi asks, scratching his head in confusion.

Tsubasa sniggers as Takki glares.

02. teriyaki chicken

You can't go wrong with teriyaki chicken; it's one of the easiest dishes to cook! Even I can cook it!

Takki looks expectantly at Tsubasa. “Jin said that. If Bakanishi can cook it, so can I.”

Tsubasa shrugs, how can he argue with the pure logic of that statement? Rinsing the chicken tenderloins under cold water, he passes the chicken to Takki for slicing.

“You're not allergic to chicken, are you?” He teases, unable to resist a dig at his partner.

Takki rolls his eyes and slices the chicken into bite-size pieces, and Tsubasa winces when he sees how uneven the pieces are, but he decides to hold his tongue. Takki miraculously finishes slicing the chicken with no accidents and no sneezes, and Tsubasa directs him to start preparing the marinade.

“Heat the soy sauce, mirin and sugar, bring it to boil on low heat and when it thickens, take it off the stove and marinate the meat. Sounds all right? Can you do it?” Tsubasa asks, not without a touch of anxiety.

“Of course I can.” Takki says, a tad indignantly, as he pulls out a pan and dumps Tsubasa's carefully measured ingredients into the pan.

Tsubasa glances at his slightly grubby shirt (there is a spot of soy and two spots of water) distastefully. “I need to change into a fresh shirt. Are you okay by yourself for five minutes?”

“Tsubasa, I'm not an idiot. If Jin can cook this...”

“...so can you.” Tsubasa finishes.

~

He surveys his shirts, and picks out a checked T-shirt when another hand shoves the shirt aside.

“I prefer you topless.” Takki breathes into his ear, grinning as his hands skims across Tsubasa's firm stomach.

“You're supposed to be watching the sauce.” Tsubasa scolds, removing Takki's hands and quickly slipping the shirt over his head, much to Takki's disappointment. “First rule of cooking, never leave your cooking unattended...” his voice trails off as a strangely familiar and very pungent odor reaches his nostrils.

The smell of something burning.

Running into the kitchen, they are greeted with a smoking pan sitting on high heat on the largest hub of the stove. Yelping, Tsubasa snatches the pan off the stove and dumps it into the sink while Takki hurriedly opens the windows, airing out the kitchen.

“Which part of low heat do you not understand?” Tsubasa says irritably as Takki hangs his head.

“I thought higher heat means I can reduce cooking time by half...”

Tsubasa groans.

~

“He uses store-bought sauces. You know, sauce-in-a-bottle.” Kame informs the dismayed Takki.

“WHAT?”

“But who on earth would actually prepare teriyaki sauce from scratch?” Jin looks both bewildered and horrified.

Tsubasa sighs as Takki knocks his head against the wall. Repeatedly.

03. sushi

“I must be insane.” Tsubasa mutters as he places a pot of perfectly cooked sushi rice on the dining table, where plates of ingredients such as salmon, tuna, egg rolls and seaweed are laid out along with a beaming Takki. “One, I can't believe I actually agreed to teach you how to make food again and two,I can't believe I'm allowing you to step a foot into the kitchen.”

“At least I won't burn down the kitchen this time.” Takki says helpfully.

Tsubasa outlines the basics and is just about to demonstrate when his phone rings. Retrieving his phone, he glances at the screen.

“It's my sister, I have to take this, be back in two minutes. Don't touch anything until I get back.” He warns, walking out of the kitchen.

Takki watches him go, and his eyes swivel back to the array of ingredients. “How hard can it be?” He mutters, and attacks the sushi rice.

~

Tsubasa looks at the squashed blobs of rice with fish with an opened mouth.

“But I did what you told me to! To squeeze the rice into a shape!” Takki picks up a tablespoon of rice onto his palm and squeeze it to demonstrate.

“I said, squeeze it gently to shape it, not as if you're wrestling with the sushi rice! And what did I say about not touching anything?” Tsubasa says menacingly.

Takki peeks timidly at his disgruntled partner and decides to opt for flattery. “Did anyone ever tell you that you look cute when you're angry?”

Tsubasa snorts. “Flattery will get you nowhere.”

Takki decides to brave it and sidle up to Tsubasa, wrapping his arms around the older man's waist, brushing his lips with a quick kiss. “What about this?”

“Marginally better.”

Takki kisses Tsubasa again, letting his lips linger, and Tsubasa returns his kiss, but just as Takki starts to pull him closer, Tsubasa dislodges himself.

“After you clean the kitchen.” He smirks.

Takki's face falls.

04. anything at all

Takki drops a stack of cookbooks on Tsubasa's lap, all of them titled with the likes of “Easy Cooking”, “5-minute meals” and so on. Tsubasa barely bats an eyelash as he turns a page of his magazine.

“There has to be something in here that I can cook.” Takki whines.

“No.” Tsubasa says calmly, his eyes still on his magazine.

“Tsuba~chaaan.”

“You are banned from the kitchen, remember?” Tsubasa reminds him primly.

“It's been two weeks! Isn't it about time you lift the ban?”

“No.”

“Am I that bad of a cook?” Takki looks crestfallen.

Tsubasa puts down his magazine and scrutinizes Takki's sad face. Sighing, he stands up. “Oh, all right, I'll teach you something easy.”

Perking up, Takki scurries into the kitchen behind Tsubasa.

~

“Instant noodles?!” Takki stares at the brightly coloured packet that Tsubasa handed him, in disbelief.

“Hey, it's easy. Just boil hot water. I'm sure you can't mess this up.”

“TSUBASA!!” Takki wails.

Laughing, Tsubasa pulls Takki to him, tugging his bangs out of his face and giving him a quick kiss. “Don't bother learning how to cook. I'll always be here to cook for you.”

Takki beams.

And Tsubasa congratulates himself for successfully protecting his sanctuary, at least for a short while.

05. strawberries and cream

“I made dessert!” Takki announces cheerfully as Tsubasa steps through the door.

A fleeting look of horror crosses Tsubasa's face as he pictures his kitchen, burnt and charred to a crisp...wait. They are in Takki's apartment.

But still, burning down any sort of kitchen is still not a good thing.

“What did you make? Dare I even ask?” Tsubasa asks warily as he follows Takki into the kitchen, bracing himself for any kind of horrific sight. But the kitchen is surprisingly clean, marble counters spotless, chrome cupboards shiny and no sign of disaster anywhere.

Tsubasa looks amazed. “Are you sure you cooked?”

“I said I made dessert. I didn't say I cooked.” Takki huffs, rummaging in the fridge.

“Then what did you...” Tsubasa's voice trails off as Takki presents him a mountain of strawberries arranged on a crystal dish and a huge bowl of whipped cream.

“Taa-daa!” Takki says, with a flourish. “Strawberries and cream! Now at least I can say I have prepared food for you.” He adds, looking all proud of himself.

Tsubasa laughs. “If you think this counts.”

“It does.” Takki nods affirmatively, popping a strawberry into his mouth. “Shall we have dessert?”

Tsubasa taps his teeth with a finger, eyes glinting mischievously. “I can think of a better way to have dessert...”

Takki smiles at his partner and slips his hands under Tsubasa's shirt. “Me, too.” He says, with an equally sly smile.

After all, there is a reason why, of all things, that it is strawberries and cream.

end drabbles

Pointless. Warned ya.

But I am really loving writing these kinds of drabbles. They're fun. Anyone has any other suggestions? :D Like, Five Times Takki Fails at Life. Or something. Cos we all know Takki does not fail at life.

I have such a bad itch to angst something. >>;;

Comments as per usual are love and <3 and ♥. I swear I am working on the chaptered For What It May Be. Yamapi for some reason is hard to write.
