Huan doesn't need to go looking for a mate, because she's found one already.

(This is because the world needs more girl+alpha aus.)

At first sight, one wouldn't think that Huan was an alpha. She's too slight, body more lean than muscular, and her features are too delicate. She looks nothing like her mother, lead alpha of the feared Lu pack, but everything like her father, the top omega in the pack who presides over the den. And really, she's fine with that. She makes it work for herself, smiling through the ridicule of others before shifting forms and watching as the looks on her tormentors’ faces morph into fear. Then, she releases her blood-curdling howl that has the lesser wolves running. Because although her body of flesh is less than frightening, her wolf is mighty; with thick, brown hair that is sleek enough to display the mass of muscle beneath, and a huge muzzle that she bares to show lethally sharp teeth, she can force even the strongest beta to its knees. But, she isn’t so cruel to every wolf out there.

Huan’s had her eye on a wolf for a while now. The push and pull of aligning with other packs had begun to bore her, and she wasn’t oblivious to her mother’s overt attempts at matching her up with strong omegas and betas that she deems worthy. Lately, Huan has humored the woman, because she’s pretty sure that she’s found her mate.

There’s a clearing a little ways away from the den that Huan had stumbled upon a few seasons ago. It’s absolutely lovely, an array of flowers and delightfully overpowering herbs in a tiny little meadow. It’s a wonderful smell to fall asleep to, and she’s been to the place many times for a well-deserved nap. But she had no idea how the plants even got there, until a few moons ago.

When she was almost asleep one day, she heard the tell-tale noise of a creature approaching and instantly jumped up. The footsteps were too heavy to be a bird or rodent, and she hadn’t wanted to provoke anything, so she’d quickly scurried into the brush. The branches stung her muzzle but she had stayed silent, waiting.

And then out of the trees had appeared a slight, pale wolf whose coat seemed almost golden in the sunlight, but a cream in the shadows. In its mouth was the woven handle to a large basket, and it had looked around the area-it seemed not to notice Huan-before painstakingly wiggling into a flowery dress before shifting. Huan had to hold in her bark of laughter at the act of modesty, but then had to stop from whimpering when she saw the wolf’s other form more clearly.

She was gorgeous. Though her wolf had been small, the girl’s form in flesh was much larger, and she had long, wavy brown hair, a few shades darker than her coat had been. When Huan was younger, she’d hair hair the same length but had since kept it cropped short so it wouldn’t get tangled with leaves and twigs. Huan had made herself comfortable, watching as the girl tended to the field of flowers and herbs, carefully picking a few and placing them in the basket. She hadn’t left until the girl had gone, shifting forms and carefully wiggling out of her dress, taking it in her mouth and placing it in the basket. Huan’s lips pulled up as the girl had scampered off, not even needing the lasting sweet smell in the air to be able to know what the girl was. An omega. Huan had fallen-hook, line, and sinker.

It’s where she’s heading now, where she always goes when nothing interesting is happening in the den. The girl isn’t always there, she hadn’t come there for most of winter, but when the weather is nice and the flowers are starting to look a little overgrown, she’s there tending to them.

It’s nice out today, sunny with a bit of a breeze, so Huan hopes she’ll be there. The brownish wolf streaks through the underbrush, a blur to the average eye due to her strong legs and years of play races with her packmates. Huan reaches the clearing and goes to settle in her usual spot, but freezes when she hears voices.

“Aw, come on now, don’t be like that. A sweet little omega like you would be lucky with mates like us.” The voice is disgustingly saccharine and almost has Huan gagging.

“She’s right. You should be begging for the honor to have my pups.”

Huan shifts into her flesh form, rising onto two legs. Unfortunately, she hadn’t brought any skins to cover herself, but that doesn’t matter right now. In the middle of the clearing, where Huan usually watches the lovely omega work, sometimes humming as she goes, are three figures. The most recognizable is on the ground, curled in on itself and noticeably trembling, coat pale in the shadows of the two standing above it. Both are in flesh form, wearing jeans and stained shirts. Huan can’t sense either excessive power or submissiveness from the woman or man standing over the poor wolf, and concludes that they’re both betas. Probably ostracized or decided to break off from their own packs, it’s not uncommon. Huan doesn’t care what it is, she can take them.

“Hey,” she snaps, stepping out of the brush “back away from her.”

The betas see her and laugh. “Have you come here to save your friend? How cute,” the woman cackles. “This is excellent, then. One for each of us!”

The man nods as the woman cheers and claps her hands beside him. “I get the short one,” he says, eyes raking down Huan’s exposed body.

The alpha’s bottom lip curls in disgust and she lowers herself into a crouch. Obviously, the two hadn’t seen her for what she is, but they’re about to. She leaps into the air, shifting halfway, and bares her teeth as she nears the pair. The woman jumps back in time, but the man is too slow. Huan manages to bite into his leg, deep, before jumping back to stand in front of the omega. Her wolf is large enough that she can shield the smaller wolf completely with her body. And she does so, blood dripping from her maw as she snarls and growls threateningly at the two standing before them.

“Shit,” the man curses, clutching his leg and sagging as the woman tries to hold him upright.

“It’s an alpha,” the woman hisses, “come on, let’s get out of here. It’s not worth it.”

The man acquiesces, throwing one last glare at Huan before hobbling off with the woman.

Huan stays crouching until both betas are out of sight, and she can’t hear the sound of their feet anymore. Then she shifts back onto two feet and turns to the still trembling omega. Huan spits out the remaining blood in her mouth and wipes her forearm across her lips. She hopes that she didn’t swallow any of it, and scrubs at her arm until all that’s left is an angry red swear. Good enough.

“Hey,” she whispers, lowering herself to her knees. “It’s okay. They’re gone, and I’m not going to hurt you.” Tentatively, Huan reaches forwards and-not unlike how she’d soothe a newborn pup whose mother is out hunting-she threads her fingers into soft fur and carefully strokes down the wolf’s side, humming softly as she does so. To Huan’s immense relief, the omega ceases her shivering and goes still under her touch. Huan continues the motion for a few moments, and then moves her hand to softly ruffle the fur on the omega’s back and neck. Feeling brave, she ventures over to touch the wolf’s flattened ears, but the wolf raises her head suddenly and before Huan can react, the omega snaps at her hand, teeth penetrating skin, and then jumps up, running off into the forest.

Huan cradles her injured hand to her chest. She looks down at the bite marks and then sees the crushed remains of a woven basket where the two betas had been, and a ripped, flower-patterned cloth. Huan sighs and looks up at the sky, which had been clear and bright this morning, but is now overcast and hopelessly gloomy.

Huan doesn’t stop visiting the clearing. Even when her mother shoots her disapproving looks as she leaves the den in the morning, she continues to go. Now, instead of hiding in the brush, she lays in the now overgrown meadow, careful not to disturb any of the cheerfully bright blossoms as she splays out her bare body. And then, staring up at the sky, she waits.

The omega hasn’t returned since the confrontation, and the sad state of the meadow proves it. Huan had tried, a while ago, to tend to one of the more beautiful flowers, a bright, golden thing that had drawn Huan’s complete attention each time she’d seen it, but had succeeded only in ridding the plant of every single one of its gorgeous flowers. She’d given up after that, and now she just waits. Hoping that the omega will come back.

And then, one day, while Huan’s lying in the meadow with her eyes closed, she hears footsteps.

They’re soft, almost like whoever it is is trying their best not to disturb her, and then there’s the distinct sound of a vine snapping and a soft gasp as the person stops themselves from falling. Huan keeps her eyes closed, a smile pulling at her lips.

“Hello,” the greeting is whispered, accompanied with a soft tap to her shoulder.

Huan sits up and grins when she sees the omega standing before her, eyes cast to the ground and soft curves hidden beneath a soft pink blouse that reaches halfway down her thighs. Then Huan sees that she’s holding a similar dress in her outstretched hand and frowns.

“Please put it on,” the omega requests, voice a little louder. Huan can see that her cheeks are tinged pink.

“Your modesty is unnecessary,” Huan huffs, “But, if this is what you want…” she trails off before grabbing the thin fabric, pulling it over her head and sliding her arms through the holes with only a few issues. She frowns as she tries to pull the fabric to her knees, but it isn’t long enough. The dress is tight, stretches only slightly to fit her body, but it’s difficult to move in. Huan much prefers her too-large skins and furs back in the den. But this is for the omega. She sighs are drops her arms to her side. “There.”

The omega looks up and utters a relieved sigh. “It looks great! I didn’t know if it would fit, but I knew that you had to be a small size.” Now that the omega is talking in a normal voice, Huan’s eyes widen. It’s a very rich sound, with a fullness to it that makes Huan’s chest feel tight-and not just because of the dress. But, when the omega doesn’t say anything after that, the shorter of the two sighs and flops to the ground, resuming the position she’d had before.

“So is that it? You just came to give me a dress?” She tries not to sound too put out.

“No! I wanted to thank you and say… I’m sorry.” She falls to her knees beside Huan, and the alpha stays completely still as the omega quietly reaches for her hand and looks at the pinpricks that are the only proof that remain of her sudden bite. “I was scared,” she says quietly, “I didn’t-”

Huan huffs, not wanting the omega to burst in tears. In all honestly, the marks should be long healed by now. She’s sustained worse bites from hunting. It’s only because the bite is from another wolf that it’s taking so long. With a hard tug, Huan pulls the omega down, grinning when the wolf squeaks and lands on the ground, head pillowed on Huan’s chest and long legs tangled in front of her. She takes a second to breathe and then quickly kicks Huan in the shin and gives her chest a weak slap.

“What was that?”

Huan doesn’t answer, merely catches the hands again when they aim to his her lower, in the gut, and studies them. The omega has slighter longer fingers than her own, and her legs are longer, too. Huan moves closer, tangling her slightly shorter legs in the omega’s almost gangly ones and rests her head on the ground, in between the taller’s neck and shoulder. She breathes in and sighs. It’s been too long. “Tell me your name,” Huan requests, fingers playfully threading through the omega’s.

“Chanmi,” the girl forces out, a little breathless. “What’s yours?”

“Huan,” she says. Chanmi, she thinks, mouthing the word. Cute. “You’re not claimed?”

“No,” Chanmi says, voice gaining back its richness, if only slightly, “Are you?”

“No.”

“Good,” Chanmi says, too quickly, and then quickly realizes what she’d said. She tries to hide her face, but Huan makes that impossible. “I, um, came by a few times and you were always here. Your wolf is cute.”

Huan laughs. “But your wolf is prettier.”

“Of course it is.”

Huan laughs, hands falling to rest on the omega’s stomach. They stay like that, lying in the meadow, watching as the sun falls and the sky looks aflame.

Chanmi shifts, fingers gently prying off Huan’s. “I have to go,” she says, tone somber.

“Wait,” Huan mumbles, wriggling closer. “I need to do something real quick.” And then she nuzzles her face into Chanmi’s neck, arm forcing the omega to stay still when she bursts into laughter and begins to flail her long limbs. Huan quickly rubs her scent over the neck of the omega-and her collarbones too, just in case-before letting her up. “Sorry,” she murmurs, though it’s not genuine at all-she’s very pleased with Chanmi’s disheveled appearance. “Instinct.”

“I don’t mind,” the omega says with a crooked smile. Huan thinks it’s adorable. “I like the way you smell.”

Huan thinks she’s glowing with happiness. “Then, someday I’ll claim you for real.”

“Please do,” Chanmi says, barely a sigh but Huan still hears. Then the tall girl looks up at the sky and sighs sadly. “But, I really do have to go.” She snaps her fingers, features morphing into something more hopeful. “I’ll be here tomorrow,” she says.

Huan smiles. “And I’ll be here waiting.”
