Baekhyun/Sehun, ~2600w, drabble, pg

In which Sehun is dreadfully oblivious and Baekhyun doesn't try hard enough.

"She dumped me."

Bakehyun's not really sure what he's supposed to do, so he opens his arms and tries to figure out his next move as the other collapses into his chest and-oh god, are those tears? Burying a hand in scraggly hair that's been dyed much too often, the brunet wonders how attached Sehun even was to the girl.

Well, he'd had that stupid crush on her in middle school. And the kid had even blushed when she'd complimented his hair freshman year.

Yikes.

Patting the younger gently on his little bleached head, Baekhyun can only come up with, "There are other fish in the sea." Sehun spares him a teary-eyed glance before bursting into a whole new round of sobs.

*

It was never really a secret that Baekhyun didn't like whatever-her-name-was ("Sooyeon," Sehun would inform him with a dreamy smile. "Her name is Sooyeon." Baekhyun would reply with an uninterested grunt). He'd made it painfully clear about a year before the whole mess had begun.

"Why is she sitting here?" Baekhyun demanded as soon as two trays were set on the table instead of just one.

Sehun offered the offender a smile and patted the chair next to him with a reassuring, "Ignore him, he just failed the history test," and outright beamed when she sat down and gave him the slightest semblance of a smile.

Five minutes into lunch, Baekhyun tapped his fingers on the table in irritation. "You didn't answer my question," he reminded Sehun as lightly as he could, interrupting Soo-something's hilarious tale of how she'd mistaken one English word for another or something like that and how silly it'd been and can you believe that?

Still laughing, Sehun turned to his friend. "Loosen up! She's with us because her friend stayed back to talk to a teacher about something," he turned slightly to receive an affirming nod from her, and then went on, "So she decided to sit with us today. But she'll move back tomorrow." He finished with a small pout.

She laughed and poked his puffed-out cheek. "You never know, I might always decide to come back again tomorrow." She tossed her long obsidian hair and giggled as Sehun's face burst into a grin.

Baekhyun gagged.

"I don't get it!" He ranted to Chanyeol, the only one who continued to let him whine about Sehun-related subjects, as long as it took place in the library and allowed time for the awkward sophomore to finish last-minute assignments and projects while Baekhyun whined. "I don't know what he sees in her!"

"Her chest?"

The shorter brunet groaned. "There's more to a person than their outward appearance!"

Chanyeol paused in his explanation on the relevancy and importance of middle-age literature still being taught in schools and raised an eyebrow at the exasperated teen. "Well, aren't we deep today?"

Baekhyun picked up a book to throw at the other boy, but slid it back onto the shelf when he saw the librarian out of the corner of his eye. With a drawn-out sigh, he collapsed into the chair across from his frantically writing classmate. "I just-" He sighed and tried again. "I just wish he'd smile like that with me."

Chanyeol eyed him from under his bangs.

"I mean," Baekhyun began, glaring at the judgmental boy, "that I say funny things too. But he doesn't laugh. He just rolls his eyes and gives me this look and I just want to punch it off his face and-why are you looking at me like that?"

Chanyeol huffed, turning back to his half-finished paper. "Have you told him yet?"

Baekhyun froze. "Told him what?"

"Don't play dumb." When Baekhyun merely blinked in reply, Chanyeol sighed and clasped his hands together, fluttering his lashes and staring at Baekhyun lovingly. "Sehun, I've loved you since we were toddlers and I want you to love me too. I can be your prince and we can skip into the sunset holding hands, you just have to ditch-"

Baekhyun slapped a hand over the giant's mouth and looked around warily, drawing back with a cry when the jerk licked his palm. "What the hell?"

"I'm surprised you let me go on that long," Chanyeol remarked, returning to his writing.

Baekhyun shrugged. "You caught me off-guard." He tapped his heel on the ground, worrying his lower lip. "But," he began helplessly, "you know I can't."

"And why not?"

"Because," Baekhyun started matter-of-factly, giving Chanyeol a knowing look, "Sehun is not attracted to guys, much less me, and I think it might be a bit creepy to find out that the guy you grew up with wants to bone you."

Chanyeol frowned. "Well, you could put it more eloquently?"

Baekhyun waved him away. "Wouldn't matter anyway. He's too hooked on what's-her-name."

"Sooyeon."

Baekhyun groaned. "Not you, too."

*

Three months and zero attempts made by Baekhyun later, Sehun had gathered the guts to ask his ideal everything out via a bouquet of roses and a heartfelt confession. Baekhyun watched from the sidelines as skinny, pale, and beautiful accepted-of course she would, who wouldn't say yes to Sehun when he looked at you like that-and Sehun pulled her into a bear hug, swinging her around the entrance to the high school, flashing a smile and thumbs-up to Baekhyun when he caught his eye. Baekhyun waved back, donning a grin because how could he be sad when the kid was that happy?

As he passed Chanyeol in the hallway a few days later, the giant grabbed him and pulled him into a bone-crushing hug, eying him meaningfully before dashing off to his class. Baekhyun had almost broken down right there and then.

But he didn't because a second later Sehun came dancing towards him, spouting some nonsense about how beautiful life was. Baekhyun laughed and playfully slapped a bony arm, rolling his eyes as the younger's antics continued. Before leaving, Sehun mussed Baekhyun's hair and proclaimed "you'll understand when you finally fall in love, Baekkie," prancing away right after, no doubt for Soo-whatever.

Baekhyun heaved out a sigh once the other was out of earshot and muttered under his breath, "but I do understand."

*

Baekhyun tapped his foot impatiently as he tried to drown out the quiet sobs from across the table, trying to pay attention to the loud taps of the rain as it hit the window as he wondered why their drinks were taking so long. Finally, he couldn't take it any longer and leaned across the table, waiting for red-rimmed eyes to meet his. As delicately as possible, Baekhyun formed his thoughts into a trigger-free question.

"So, why'd she break up with you?"

Sehun sobbed once more before dragging a palm across his face, smearing the tears on his cheeks. Baekhyun wanted nothing more than to walk over and brush the tears away with his own fingers but the timing really couldn't be any worse. As he realized this, Baekhyun sneered at the ground and contemplated brushing his lips against the other's cheeks because talk about confus-wait, Sehun was talking.

"I don't..." He sighed and tried again, "I don't even really know. She's happy one minute and then the next she's stopping me in the hall and telling me-" Sehun let out a particularly loud cry and Baekhyun jumped in his seat. Sehun glanced up apologetically and continued, fiddling with the straps on his backpack as he suppressed more tears from falling, "she tells me that she doesn't want to be with me any more." He finished, so quiet the rain almost drowned him out.

Baekhyun gave up and got out of his seat, walking over to the sulking boy. "Hey," he whispered, tapping the younger on the shoulder, not really surprised when the other jumped in shock, staring questioningly at the seat across from him, where Baekhyun had been just a second ago. "Do you want to stay the night at my place?"

Sehun let out a broken laugh and managed a smile. "Yeah," he answered in a hushed voice.

Smiling, Baekhyun was about to grab the younger's bag and sling it over his shoulder when their waiter appeared behind him, brandishing two glasses and looking bored out of his mind. Not at all pleased with being interrupted, Baekhyun shoved a five dollar bill in the waiter's direction before grabbing Sehun's backpack in one hand and a slim wrist in the other, walking out of the tiny cafe. The rain wasn't coming down any lighter, so Baekhyun herded Sehun to the side of the path, underneath the awnings of the closed stores. It was too late for anything to be open, and everyone else was already home by now.

Baekhyun cracked a smile and swung his and Sehun's joined hands, trying to cheer up the younger. He ignored the little droplets of rain hitting his shoulder in favor of staring at the blond's brooding face. "You're too good for her, I hope you know."

"Huh?"

"She didn't deserve you," Baekhyun tried again, watching as Sehun's face screwed up into a look of utter confusion. He shook his head and squeezed the other's hand. "Never mind."

"Why would you say that?"

"Hmm?" Hummed Baekhyun, wondering if he had heard wrong.

"I didn't deserve her," Sehun clarified almost angrily. "She was perfect and she finally realized that I was below her level."

The soaked teen almost stopped entirely, trying to check his outrage before arguing back. "Sehun, the girl was a tease," he wanted to continue with and she was a bitch for leaving you, but he really didn't want Sehun hating him so he merely finished with, "and someone else could treat you better. You just need to wait for her." Or him.

Sehun, almost back to his old persona as if arguing with Baekhyun could take his mind off of his heartbreak. "Yeah?" He asked, offering the boy a forced smile. "And who would that be?"

Me. Instead of saying that word or something equally as stupid, Baekhyun cleared his throat and offered his friend a smile. "We're here." He whipped out a key, unwillingly letting go of Sehun's soft hand to shove his door open. He called out a greeting to his parents and let them know Sehun was sleeping over with another shout. They greeted the younger and briefly chewed Baekhyun out for coming home late before wishing him a good night.

Sehun collapsed in the older brunet's bed, groaning and rolling onto his stomach, covering himself in the unmade blankets. Baekhyun rolled his eyes and dumped both bags on the ground, leaving the room to change and dry his hair off. He returned to find that Sehun hadn't moved an inch. With a brief eye-roll, Baekhyun stalked over and dried the younger's hair from the brief instances of darting out into the rain to cross roads and the like. He threw the towel into a hamper in the corner and sat on his bed, pulling his legs up. "Hey," he began with a grin, "now we can talk dirt."

Sehun groaned and complained to the sheets about Baekhyun's shitty timing.

The older sighed and gave up on the various break-up humor he had collected for this exact reason, but now that the time had come, he really didn't feel like using it. A sad Sehun affected those around him and even Baekhyun was starting to grow morose. He switched off the light by his bedside, bathing the room in darkness. Clambering back onto the bed, Baekhyun shifted so that he sat right at the headboard, leaning forward to draw patterns and circles onto Sehun's back. Every now and then he would mutter something about how life goes on and it was only high school, and Sehun would grunt in response.

Baekhyun's horrible advice grew quieter and quieter until finally he was whispering small threats to the girl and Sehun had stopped responding with small noises. He sighed and covered the younger in a thick quilt, navigating himself until he was facing the sleeping teen, pulling the blanket tight around his figure. After much deliberation, he reached up and traced the small lines in Sehun's face that hadn't been there a few months earlier.

"She's wearing you down," Baekhyun whined to the sleeping boy, running a finger over the line in the younger's forehead. With both hands, he cupped the younger's cheeks and grinned. What he would give to do this while the other was awake. What he would give to have Sehun swing him around like he had done with Soo-traitor. With that, Baekhyun let his hands drop from the younger's face. What was he even doing.

Almost immediately, Sehun' entire face scrunched up in a frown.

A nightmare? Baekhyun flailed and gently traced the younger's hairline while humming quietly, relieved when the expression cleared into something tranquil and sweet, an expression Baekhyun loved to see on the younger. Heck, Baekhyun loved all over Sehun's expressions. He loved his eyes, his hair, his shoulders, and, "I love you," he whispered before he could stop himself.

Sehun's eyes flashed open and Baekhyun froze. "What?"

What.

Baekhyun scrambled away, snatching his hand from Sehun's cheek as if it was on fire. He scooted to far and fell off the bed, landing on his back with a small cry, staring into Sehun's incredulous gaze that seemed slightly fearful. Baekhyun feared the worst, already prepared to flee the room.

Sehun looked down at the soft blue blanket and began patting it down. "How long?"

Baekhyun remained unmoving. "What?"

"How long have you, um," Sehun coughed lightly.

The brunet diverted his gaze guiltily to the ground. "A while," he answered simply.

"Before..."

Baekhyun nodded.

Sehun was quiet for a few minutes, leaving Baekhyun to stare apprehensively at the door. Finally, he gave a small laugh, causing the older to jump slightly. "Sooyeon, she said something one time... I didn't believe her. But, I guess she was right," he stated in wonder.

Baekhyun gritted his teeth. "Yeah." He caught one look at Sehun's thoughtful gaze aimed at his wall and groaned inwardly. He should have never said anything. He should have just kept his stupid mouth shut and been content with complaints to Chanyeol before finding some guy in college, he should have just-what was that?

Sehun dashed back to the bed with an impish smile as Baekhyun caressed his cheek.

"Did you just..." the older began, still feeling the warm remnants of lips to his cheek. He shook his head. "Nope, you're just really confused because you just got dumped and since I lumped my feelings into this, you're getting confused and you might think you're feeling something that you're not actually feeling. At all."

Sehun shook his head. "I don't think that's it." At Baekhyun's frown, he continued. "I think, maybe, I've always kind of liked you. Maybe, if you had said something earlier, there wouldn't have been a Sooyeon."

Baekhyun choked on air. He couldn't dare to hope anything like that. "What are you saying?"

The dyed blond shrugged. "I'm saying that it's late at night and it's cold in here. You should just come back over to the bed."

"Right," Baekhyun huffed, standing up on shaky legs. "But we're talking about this in the morning." He pointed an accusing finger at the younger boy and groaned when Sehun smiled in response. He slowly made his way over and crawled into the bed, lying down and glaring straight at Sehun, who leaned over and pecked him on his forehead.

Sehun grinned and leaned back. "Maybe breaking up with Sooyeon was a good thing?" He whispered under his breath. Louder, he sang, "goodnight, Baek."

Baekhyun, smile tugging at his lips and a curious smile aimed at Sehun, wondering what in the world the younger was thinking, replied, "goodnight, Sehun."
