As far as popups go, with browsers, try Mozilla. The latest version supresses popups. Plus its a tabbed browser, and is *gasp* Free! :D

And get SpyBot, it scans your machine for spyware and security breaches (you'd be suprised! :O they end up secretly putting a lot of crap on your machine...).

And if you're really paranoid (or just have cable/DSL) then you might want to get Zone Alarm (a free firewall program).
