It’s Not Fear
“Admit it Sam …you’re afraid.”
“Shut up Dean.”
“Sammy’s afraid of the clown.”
“Shut the fuck up Dean.”
“Need me to hold your hand?”
“You knew it was National Clown Week didn’t you …and we just happen to stop in the one God damn town celebrating it.”
“Watch out, here comes Bozo.” Dean said with a smile, spying the colorful clown strolling down the sidewalk towards them.
Sam’s body betrayed him with a slight jerk on seeing the dysfunctional adult in ill-fitting clothes approaching their position. Heavy makeup concealed the man’s identity, instead displaying a fake red smile, plastered on in blood red paint for the entire world to see.
Dean grinned at Sam’s instinctive response. He knew his brother would like nothing better than to bolt back to their motel room, but his stubborn pride prevented him from making a quick escape.
Sam’s body tensed as the clown strolled by without pause. As the threat passed, he let out his pent up breath, thankful to be breathing freely again. It just wasn’t natural, he thought, grown men dressing up and parading around in multi-colored costumes in the middle of the day. Not that he wanted to encounter a clown during the dead of night either.
“You coming or what?” Dean prompted as Sam stood staring at the clown’s retreating back.
“That’s just wrong.” Sam muttered when the clown was finally a safe distance away and he felt comfortable turning his back on it as it continued down the sidewalk, seeking other prey.
“Hey Sam, maybe we can catch a show while we’re here.”
“No.”
“If you’re good, I might even let you get your face painted.”
“I’m not five Dean.”
“Acting like it.”
“Just because I don’t like clowns.”
“Come on, admit it Sam, you’re afraid.”
“I’m not afraid Dean …I just …I hate them okay.”
“They’re just clowns for crying out loud.”
“They’re evil Dean.”
