Haruki Murakami, November 2005

You don't analyze a dream, you just pass through it. A dream is sometimes healing and sometimes it makes you anxious. A narrative is the same--you are just in it. A novelist is not an analyst. He just transforms one scene into another. A novelist is one who dreams wide awake. He decides to write and he sits down and dreams away, then wraps it ( Read more... )

oh, I just read that article. I thought that quote was great at first, but then I agreed with the reviewer that wait...not all dreams are interesting. I still don't think anyone's quite nailed down what makes murakami tick, as a writer - not even himself.

I think maybe Murakami is saying he can't be nailed down as a writer because the writing process (at least as he practices it) is remote from the rational, analytical process required to nail it down ( ... )

I have a 5:00 pm event, then a 5:30 pm event (which i will be late to), both in the downtown area. I know my wife mentioned wanting to go. I would like to go if we can. I will be the guy in a sports jacket, gray trousers, and walking cast!

Maybe he means warm like when you say you have to "warm up" the engine on your car? Get it started, sort of? I don't know, but I love Murakami's writing.
How're you?

I read up to the last sentence on your entry when I decided to post my comment. I suppose if I'd read a sentence longer, I would have realized you already had that thought, so next time I'll remember to finish.

Great minds think alike!

Did you see Willie at the rodeo? I almost went - but had to give my tickets to a friend at the last minute.

Hope you got some good mexican food while you were visiting!

Yes, we saw Willie at the rodeo Monday night. I love his voice, it reminds me of all kinds of good memories.
I didn't get as much mexican as I would have liked since Mark dislikes it strongly. I did have some really great breakfast tacos from a place called Emme's (sp?) that's on Babcock right before it takes that turn and changes to DeZavala. Carne asada and carne mexicana on corn. If you haven't been, you need to.
