Amnesia is temporary, but dementia is permanent and doesn't affect just memory but emotion and won't let you change as a person because you can't retain what you learn.
When I read the end I couldn't stop myself from crying. This is so sad especially because it won't get better no matter what. I feel sad for both of them. Arthur has all my respect and I hope for him that Alfred will remember at least once in a while.
It's hard to say how Alfred will end up, really. Trauma to the head is really hard to tell with the outcome of future developments, but we can always hope for the best.
Oh dear, I'm sorry if it hurt you and made you upset given how you work closely with it, but I'm glad you liked it too. Haha, awkward feelings on opposite ends of the spectrum.
