chapters held hostage for reviews?

one author in a fandom i follow has the following at the end of each chapter she writes -- what is your opinion of this and what do you do when you see something like this:

"+10 reviews-Update in a week (maybe less if I'm in the mood).

+15 reviews-Update quickly"

This behavior is never acceptable. An author can be banned on Dokuga for doing this

it's an i/kag author. it is amazing how many reviews her stories get, i think she's young, a teen maybe. her explanation is that her compensation for writing is reviews... i noticed that she demanded more from her older stories. her prices have gone down.

i like to encourage people who are new to the fandom and who i see has potential so i will review, it's like when i favor a piece of art i feel obligated to leave a comment. the reason i have over seven hundred pieces of art in my dA inbox is that i have to sit and compile something to say, i agree, words aren't always easy.

I am in complete and total agreement with Lando and Sakura on this. It's totally childish and I won't support authors who do it. If I have something to say about a story, I'll say it, but don't try and force me to tell you something meaningless just to boost your review numbers. If I see a note like this at the end of a chapter I may leave a review to tell them what I think of the behavior and why I am no longer reading the story... just depends in my mood.

Personally, as an author, I enjoy seeing the favorite and alert notices just as much as reviews. Of course it's nice to read what people think, but just knowing they want to read more (or again if it's complete) gives me warm and fuzzy feelings ^_^.

i believe she's in her teens and has an attitude that since she's not getting paid that her compensation should be reviews and feels her work is popular enough that people who want to read her stories should leave a note.

i feel the same as you and the others but even in dA i feel obligated to comment on a work i 'fav' and it's probably why i have seven hundred or so pieces of art that i need to find the words to comment on so i can add them to my favorites. it can be overwhelming.

i thought better of saying anything and i'm not going to worry about her. she has a ton of reviews for her stories and the price has gone down from her earlier work (i had to look =p ) so by the time she grows up a little more i think she'll stop asking.

Definitely childish. Brands the story as something I won't bother with.

Wow, I hate when author's do that. It comes off bitchy, lack of modesty and like they aren't confident enough in their work. It's not really fair to the readers. I understand that every writer wants reviews but this is not the way to get real recognition for their work.

I'm very against this method of raking in reviews.

me too, the thing is that this one feels she's entitled and i tend to avoid and ignore people who demand recognition. either one deserves it or they don't. sometimes it takes a little while for the recognition and praise to come, we've all paid our dues but such impatience grates on my nerves.

Yeah, exactly and it's not fair to the other readers who bend over backwards with support and feedback. The author is using her writing as a person in a corporation would. It's about numbers, not quality. It's really messed up, but there's writer's out there that are like that.
