Madge fixates on Gale Hawthorne’s rough breath, the green flecks in his gray eyes. She doesn’t ever say anything of substance to him, not really, knows most of her friends wouldn’t exactly approve if she did, but she fixates anyway because she likes Gale more than it’s decent to like somebody you barely know. Because, truly, Gale is somebody she barely knows: Somebody who comes to your doorstep with contraband on occasion is not somebody who you know, merely somebody whose existence you acknowledge for mutual benefit.
Still, Madge watches. Yearns (she thinks it’s yearning at least, because she’s somewhat unaccustomed to wanting without any relief whatsoever). Hates herself when she realizes who Gale likes best (Katniss, always Katniss, with her dirty clothes and stifled smile). It’s a cruel game she plays with herself, every time he comes to the backdoor, and she fantasizes a thousand and one what ifs in the fleeting moments they speak. She tends to chastise herself later, because wanting is ever so
