I don't think they should do away with Valentine's Day, but I think it should be highly downgraded to just an observance. Technically by all that reasoning you could eliminate St. Patrick's Day by saying he was just a guy that got rid of some snakes and killed some pagans by most accounts. I agree with you that if you love someone you should show them at random times with meaning rather than because culture and the 'norm' dictates that you should on this specific day. Although, I do love the candy sales afterwards.
