My son used to have the same problem and had to reformat his computer a few years ago even though he'd installed an anti-virus program that I'd purchased at Circuit City. Once my son had his computer back up and running I set him up on my Windows Live Care account and he hasn't had a problem since. (He's also old enough now to buy his own stuff and has his own account.)Of course WLC is now being shut down by Microsoft but they have a new free anti-virus service called Microsoft Security Essentials that I have installed on both of the laptops my wife and I purchased on sale at Best Buy last November.
