Character history- One look at Konata’s family life is more than enough to see where she gets all her eccentricities from. Since her mother, Kanata Izumi, passed away shortly after giving birth, her upbringing was left to her father, Soujirou Izumi- who watches anime, plays video games, dabbles in dating sims of all kinds, and has allowed his daughter to do the same from since she was old enough to pick up a controller. Suffice to say, Konata’s childhood was anything but normal- not only did Konata inherit her mother’s smaller physique, she ended up inheriting her father’s personality AND most of his tastes in manga and anime, too.
Other than that, Konata was able to keep up a relatively normal social life throughout elementary and middle school- it helped that she was familiar with just about every cartoon made at the time, along with other series that weren’t quite so child-friendly. Grade-wise, Konata managed to meander along through the school system with just enough diligence to avoid sinking, and with more than enough procrastination to enjoy her chosen hobbies. Somewhere along the line, Konata discovered that she had an innate athleticism that belied her diminutive stature; not too soon afterwards, she made the equally important discovery that she didn’t really care too much for sports, since sports clubs would cut into her anime-watching-slash-gaming time.
Konata eventually made it into Ryouou High, having passed the school’s stringent entrance exams by the grace of a promised PS2 hard work and guts. It’s there that she met most of her current friends, and she now spends most of her days poking fun at Kagami Hiiragi, sympathizing with Tsukasa Hiiragi’s utter inability to do well in class, and constantly being floored by Miyuki Takara’s almost unfair number of turn-ons. And there’s also the online game that Konata’s been spending time on, where she groups quite frequently with Nanako Kuroi, her homeroom teacher.
Halfway through the series (and after the new year), Konata’s life at home became more crowded than it used to be; her younger cousin, Yutaka Kobayakawa, also began studying at Ryouou High, and began living at Konata’s house since it was closer to school. This meant more visits from her older cousin, Yui Narumi. The start of the new semester also brought with it a new class of freshmen, Yutaka’s friend Minami Iwasaki, pairing maniac doujin artist Hiyori Tamura, and American weeaboo otaku Patricia Martin.
Despite her own eccentricities and the ups and downs of everyday life, though, Konata’s experiences can be best described as “ordinary.” She’s nearing the end of her high school life, having attended a school trip to Kyoto and, most recently, preparing for the last cultural festival she’ll ever attend, though as an active participant-in a cheerleading routine with her friends.
Character personality- Konata Izumi is, in a word, off-beat. Under most circumstances, she’s a friendly (though somewhat low-tension) high school girl who seems content to drift through life; though she’s fairly intelligent, her grades average out to merely mediocre, and she doesn’t actually participate in any of her school’s clubs. However, Konata’s two passions in life- video games and anime- are enough to utterly eradicate any illusions of normality; due primarily to her father’s influence, she’s a hardcore fangirl to the point where both subjects tend to seep into her everyday conversations.
Konata doesn’t have very many preferences where anime and video games are concerned; she leans heavily towards RPGs similar to Dragon Quest and Super Robot Wars, along with a wide spectrum of dating sims, though she’s also a fair hand with fighting games and rhythm games. Of course, Konata is familiar with the classic mainstays of the 8-bit era, so she’s decent with platformers. Konata’s tastes are even broader where anime is concerned, though she claims not to be a hardcore mecha fan (with a few major exceptions).
While she’s a night owl and a shameless procrastinator, Konata is also an expert at cramming the night before any given exam, assuming that she cares enough to do so. Getting Konata motivated isn’t too hard, so long as the right buttons are pressed (i.e. her utter obsession with anime and video games); she took on a part-time job at a maid café in Akihabara to raise funds for her next buying sprees at annual Comiket conventions and, with the fate of her next gaming console on the line, raised her grades enough to net herself a fairly high-end console.
Konata stands about a head shorter than most of her friends, which is something that’s bugged her for a while now- she claims that she hasn’t grown an inch since sixth grade, perhaps because she inherited her looks from her similarly-diminutive mother. On the other hand, she’s not above taking advantage of her diminutive stature to, say, get the children’s rate on movie tickets, and she’s also taken a perverse sort of pride in being flat-chested (“it’s a status symbol!!”). At the same time, she’s old enough to legally buy adult games never mind the fact that she played all of her dad’s games even when she WASN’T old enough, making her something of an oddity among her classmates.
In the unnamed MMORPG that Konata’s engrossed with, she plays a fighter-type damage dealer; her main character is male (and is married in-game to a female character played by a guy), though she’s shown playing a female character on one occasion-she’s familiar with the fluid nature of gender roles and anonymity on the Internet, to say the least. Also, as mentioned before, Konata often makes dorky references during normal conversations, either hinting at anime and video game tropes (calling her computer a tsundere, for instance) or outright referring to various series (whether or not anyone else understands what she’s talking about).
Despite all this, Konata remains an outgoing person. She DOES have a mischievous streak, and she enjoys poking minor fun at people just to get a rise out of them (especially where Kagami is concerned); on the whole, she’s content to chat it up with others over various subjects, ranging from life’s little oddities to the correct way of eating chocolate cornets.
Digimon personality- Vi-Elecmon is, to say the least, mildly disappointed that her tamer isn’t a super-energetic go-getter with hot blood, burning passion, and/or a tendency to do crazy reckless things. Instead, the digimon got a laid-back midget otaku with Knowledge: Commonly-Used Tropes. That’s not to say that Vi-Elecmon HAS any of the over-the-top qualities that she hoped her partner would have; she was just kinda hoping that having a tamer would let her get swept up into an action-packed world, or anything that’d be a break from her boringly normal life.
More often than not, Vi-Elecmon finds herself playing the straight man to Konata’s occasional non-sequitur and out-of-place anime/game reference, and trying to resist her partner’s attempts to get her interested in said anime and games. It’s not like Vi-Elecmon will be interested in such dorky things, even if they DO depict interestingly action-packed worlds that are a total break from her boringly normal life. Honest.
Character abilities- Nothing worth mentioning, save for an encyclopedic knowledge of otaku culture, and its associated tropes. Oh, and Konata is quite athletic; she just doesn’t bother with sports or strenuous outdoor activities. In the end, she’s a completely normal human.
Sample RP-
“ACHOO!”
Konata sniffed and wiped her nose with the edge of her sleeve. Normally, she’d have used her handkerchief or tissues, but for the fact that they were currently both sopping wet, much like the rest of her clothes and everything in her pockets. Similarly, she wouldn’t have used the sleeve of her school uniform, since she was currently wearing the only article of clothing that she seemed to have on her person, if not for the fact that she’d woken up in ankle-deep mud and cleanliness was already a lost cause.
The third-year student sighed, glancing up at the gray sky. It was still visible between the boughs of the huge tree that sheltered her. More to the point, the sky was still pouring down rain with a vengeance, and it didn’t look like it was going to let up anytime soon. Somehow, it was still ridiculously humid… though that was probably to be expected. After all, this was a jungle.
And as if to top it all off, she had no idea where she was, or where any of her friends were.
Despite her situation, Konata smirked as a thought suddenly occurred to her. “Don’t characters that get transported to another world usually wake up in a clearing or a meadow when the weather’s clear…?”
After a moment, she tapped a finger to her chin. At least this chain of thought was taking her mind off of her predicament and of her imminent panic attack. “Well, everything else seems to be on par with this kinda setting. No supplies… check. Mysterious item…” Konata looked down to the odd device clutched in her right hand. “… check. I’m pretty sure my cell phone didn’t look this expensive.”
She leaned back against the tree and wrapped her arms around herself against the chill, closing her eyes. “All that’s left is an adorable mascot to walk up to me and say-“
“YOU’RE my tamer!?”
“Nnwhoa!!” Konata yelped, her eyes snapping back open to stare at the blue frog-rabbit creature in front of her. On instinct, she rose to her feet and pressed herself against the tree behind her, even as she started replying. “What-“
“I can’t believe it,” the creature groaned, her fanned tail wilting noticeably. “How does Yggdrasil expect me to work with this human? She’s a little girl!”
“As expected of the talking animal companion… it doesn’t miss a beat with its quips,” Konata murmured, scratching her cheek. She paused, glancing back down at the creature. “… wait, you’re a talking animal. This’s turned into a pretty crazy situation, hasn’t it?”
“I’m a Vi-Elecmon!” the talking animal snapped back, before covering her face with her paws. “I walked all the way to Dokako Jungle for this…?” With a resigned sigh, Vi-Elecmon sat back on her haunches and fixed Konata with her best serious look. “Okay, wait, I’m going to have a lot of explaining to do, so you should probably listen up.” She cleared her throat. “Let’s start with the basics: you’re not in your world anymore.”
Konata glanced at her surroundings. In the distance, a small swarm of Tentomon flitted by, while a Kunemon fought a Wormmon over the rights for a berry-bearing bush. “Um, I kind of figured,” she said, looking back at Vi-Elecmon. “… so is this where I get a giant robot powered by a dragon’s heart?” Konata asked brightly, raising a finger.
Vi-Elecmon just… stared at her partner.
Sample journal entry-
Level 1 Japanese schoolgirl commoner looking for group~
… er, anyway, does anyone know how to get out of this jungle, or where the nearest inn is? It’s raining, and I don’t have an umbrella in my inventory, so I’m getting kinda soaked out here. I only have this cell phone. It hasn’t turned into a sword or a gun or a magic wand, and it hasn’t given me any mysterious messages… yet.
Also, if anyone sees a tsundere someone named Kagami, Tsukasa, Miyuki, or Yutaka, could you give me a ring?
… oh, and does anyone want to trade talking animal mascots with me? My Vi-Elecmon’s been sulking for the past fifteen minutes, and I don’t think she likes me all that-
”You can’t TRADE partners!!”
You can’t? Wrong game system, then. - er, you heard everything I just said, didn’t you.
”Yes. Yes, I did.”
Hmm. Well, uh, let’s see… does anyone have any extra snacks or something? I think I’m going to need to boost my digimon’s happiness rating.
”I’m not hungry!”
… I’m gonna need to boost it by a LOT.
