“Nao?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re awesome.”

“I know.”

Nao and I were at Mizer House again. It had been three months since the incident with Uruha’s sister. Two months, three weeks, and five days since the start of summer vacation. Two months, three weeks, and two days of stress-free times and not doing squat about my summer homework.

Nao was fucking awesome for letting me copy his.

I spent most of summer vacation with my family, but sometimes, I met with Nao, and we hung out. I got to meet the people he worked with at a ramen place two blocks away from Mizer House. I also got to see the one and only daughter of the people who owned the place; the gorgeous girl that made Nao’s heart flutter.

I thanked my lucky stars once more that both Nao and I were alive. Nao was alive enough to fall in love, and I was alive enough to laugh at his clumsy ass when he tripped over his own feet as he stared at his love interest. I was thankful that the episode with Waka ended with none of us hurt. We actually weren’t in any danger, but still, nothing made me appreciate life more than having a gun pointed at my face and thinking the damn thing was loaded. Nothing made me see the value of friends more than watching them being held at gunpoint.

I then got reminded of Aoi and Uruha’s conversation after the whole thing; something about a guy from Mizer being in love with me. Nao must have caught me shudder at the thought. “You okay?”

“I’m fine,” I replied. “I just remembered that time at Waka’s.”

“I see,” he sighed. “I didn’t want to remind you of that time, but I should have known you’d remember anyway. There’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you.”

“What is it?”

“When you passed out, everyone except Aoi and Uruha panicked,” my best friend said, “but there was someone who was especially alarmed. The guy didn’t let go of your hand.”

My eyes widened. Of course Nao would notice, I thought. He has photographic memory. He would notice and he would remember every single detail of that moment. “Okay,” I said, feeling my heartbeat accelerate. “Who was it?”

Before Nao could answer, the echoes of Mizer House’s doorbell pierced through the background noise of the dining area television. It was rare that the dorm would have any guests, so everyone proceeded to the front door, wondering who would visit at such a late hour.

“Can I help you?” I heard Uruha inquiring the guest I still couldn’t see through the crowd of residents. I finally saw the visitor right when she replied. I didn’t know which was more shocking - the fact that the guest was a little girl who came to Mizer House alone with nothing but a small backpack, or her response to Uruha’s question.

“Where’s my Daddy?”

A loud “EH?!” resounded from every single Mizer House resident. We all knew that a lot of the residents at Mizer were popular with the ladies, but none of us, no one ever talked about being a father, much less a father of a toddler. Uruha cleared his throat. “What’s his name?” He asked the little girl.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Mommy just told me that he lived here,” she replied, prompting another “EH?!” from us. “But I know my name. It’s Kanna. Mommy’s name is Megumi.”

And that’s when they all started to point fingers at each other.

“Saga! Didn’t you have a girlfriend named Megumi?”

“What the hell, I dated her for two months. We broke up last week. There’s no way I could have given her a toddler! Maybe she’s Jin’s.”

“Dude, I’m an alcoholic, but I’m no satyr. I would remember if I ever did shag anyone, and I know I didn’t fuck any Megumi.”

“Shh! Dammit Jin, not in front of the kid!”

“Do you remember sleeping with a certain Megumi, Yuuki?”

“I…I’m a virgin…”

“Oh. Oh shit. I’m so sorry.”

Aoi knelt in front of Kanna and gently placed a hand on one of her shoulders. “Where do you live, Kanna?” He asked the child. “Your Mom might be worried about you.”

Her black bangs hooded teary eyes as she looked down and shook her head and said something only Aoi was close enough to hear. The student council president then looked up to Uruha, who by now was scratching his head. “She doesn’t know her way back, Uruha. What do you propose we do?”

“Obviously, we can’t send her away,” the blonde replied. “She will have to stay here until we find her mother, or until her mother finds her; whichever comes first. We’ll contact the authorities and stay alert for any Missing Child reports that fit Kanna’s description.”

We all nodded in silence, knowing fully well the question that would come after. No one dared to ask that question. Well, no one, except my roommate and his big mouth. “So where’s she gonna sleep?”

Before anyone could present why their beds were unviable options, Aoi spoke. “Let her choose,” he said as he gently rubbed the little girl’s back. “Go ahead, Kanna. Whose bed do you think you’ll be comfortable in?”

Kanna looked at Aoi and Uruha for a few seconds and then looked at us. A long fifteen seconds of studying faces later, she stopped and pointed, the tip of her finger being at exactly twelve o’ clock from where I stood. “His,” she said with a smile. The rest of the guys snickered while I weakly smiled back.

Nice.

“You are potty-trained, aren’t you?” I asked Kanna as I lifted her onto the top bunk. She cheerfully nodded, and then proceeded to fluff my pillows with her small, plump hands. I sighed as I laid a sheet and one pillow on the floor.

I heard a plop that must have been her diving into my pillows. “Your bed smells nice,” she said.

“Thanks,” I muttered as I lay on the nice nest I set up, hoping that I’ll have my bed back tomorrow. I smirked as it occurred to me that all I had to give up was my bed. Freshmen had class the next day, so that meant that I wouldn’t be around to babysit her. The seniors would have to look after her when she would be fully awake and likely at her most hyper.

“Thank you, Daddy. I love you.”

As weirded out as I was at what she called me, giving up my bed didn’t feel so bad anymore as I closed my eyes. I ignored Byou’s chuckling, held on to the warm and fuzzy feeling in my chest, and drifted to sleep.

I woke up to the feeling of cold tiles on my back. I slowly opened my eyes and squinted at bright fluorescent light and the white tiles that surrounded me. With my head still spinning, I looked around and wondered how the fuck I ended up in the bathroom. It then occurred to me that I was sitting down on the bathroom floor, with Kanna in my arms.

“Oh, shit. It wasn’t a dream,” I said to myself as memories of last night came to me in waves.

I remembered. Someone shook me awake last night. I managed to make out a blue outline of a little girl. “I need to potty,” she told me.

I groaned as I peeled myself off the floor and picked myself up. Taking her hand, I trudged to the dorm’s public washroom and brought her to a random vacant toilet cubicle. I then remembered doing my best to sound coherent, asking if she needed help. And when she said no, I closed the door, turned around, and leaned on a wall between two toilet cubicles to prop myself up. REM sleep and reality played tennis with my consciousness while I waited for Kanna. My back slowly slid down the wall that supported me until my derriere touched the tiles of the bathroom floor.

Just then, I heard footsteps. I was enjoying my now rested position too much to concern myself with who it was, and even if I did care enough to know, the world of white bathroom tiles and fluorescent light spun too fast for me to make out anything that resembled a human face.

I must have been staring at him because he was talking to me. I couldn’t understand a fucking word that he sputtered, but he sounded gentle, chuckling a few times. He probably had no idea that I was absolutely incoherent and that my vision was too hazy for me to recognize him. Just as he walked closer, I closed my eyes. He whispered something, and I blacked out before I could gather enough strength to react.

Now, here I was, sitting on the bathroom floor with a toddler in my arms, remembering with alarming clarity what the guy whispered only seconds before everything went quiet.

I really like you, Kai.
