Chapter Discussion Post

Sorry for being a few days late, busy with the start of school and all.

Seeing as there's three long chapters here, it's gonna be a bit of an image dump. Also gonna try to keep the summaries more concise this time, to hopefully avoid making quite as many egregious errors as I did with my Gash Bell ones.

Dobutsu no Kuni: Chapter 0

The preview chapter stars a dark blue lynx named Kurokaki, who's out hunting alone when he's suurrounded by a pack of other, presumably evil lynxes. The leader of the pack, Madaraze tries to recruit him, but Kuro's having none of that and turns them down. Another one of the lynxes named Seigo ends up leaving with him.

The two hang out and start to become friends over time, but eventually they end up falling out over the whole carnivores-eat-meat-to-live thing and Seigo goes back to talk to Madaraze.

Seigo returns to Kuro the next day, but the entire pack is on his tail and the use the chance to ambush them. Seigo sacrifices himself to let Kuro escape, but Kuro can't bring himself to leave his friend behind and runs back to teach Madaraze's pack a new lesson in getting their asses ruined.

Kuro drags Seigo to safety afterward, but his wounds are pretty much fatal at this point and all they can really do is share a few last words before Seigo dies. Scene fast forwards to the setting of the main story, and the chapter ends.

Not a huge amount to say. It was... Really cliche, but a fairly decent chapter. As a note, Kuro is actually just a side character in the main series and there'll be a new lead from here.

Dobutsu no Kuni: Chapter 1

The chapter opens to an unnamed city, where a man is shown sitting in the river under a bridge with a baby, presumably his son. He says a few parting words and then pushes the kid away on a miniature raft, which... proceeds to vanish.

The scene switches back to the setting from the preview chapter, where the new protagonist, Monoko is fishing with a couple of his friends Dengo (leafnose) and Piman (Folgore hair). The three of them find the baby floating up the river, and decide to take him back to their tribe.

When they return, Monoko gets in to an argument with what I guess is their leader and in the process discovers that the baby is starving and probably on the brink of death. He sets out to get some milk from a herd of conveniently placed cows, and gets attacked by a tiger on the way. Kuro appears out of nowhere though, and attacks the tiger to save Monoko.

When he gets back though, the kid seems unable to actually drink anything. The baby loses consciousness as Monoko starts to panic, and has a dream about the last words the man gave him before he was abandoned, which seems to be linked to why he can't eat anything.

I'm not totally sure what happens next, but the baby wakes up to the entire tribe forming a dome around him, and they do something that looks like it links his heart with Monoko's, and whatever mental block he had is shattered. The kid finally starts drinking, and proceeds to burst out crying.

After everything is done the tribe decides to keep the kid, with Monoko taking care of him.

And this was more up to the usual standard, very nice chapter that establishes the setting and primary characters of the series. I imagine we'll get more on both next chapter, Dengo and Piman didn't play much of a role here but it looks like they're intended to be main supporting characters. Also if you haven't seen it already, check out the color spread for an Umagon cameo.

I didn't really have much of an idea what goes on here, so I'll just post the pictures. It's about a group of three friends. One of them dies partway through, and the rest of it is the other two in high school. Kinda reminded me of Cross Game.
