Sensei is referring to the famous Chinese fantasy novel of the mid-second millenium.

I wonder if those characters are part of the Chinese pantheon of gods.... ?

In which case, the characters are traditional ones, not created by even the Chinese version, but merely made into story characters there.

Do you happen to know the title of that mid-second millenium Chinese fantasy novel? I was wondering where those episodes came from, since I don't remember them from the beginning of the full Journey, but they were in a Chinese drama that I saw...

Oh... I don't mean a specific movie or story. Just the traditional gods and goddesses of China before Buddhism and Taoism were established - I was referring to the pagan set.

But the mid-second Mlm CE book is of course the Hsi Yu Ki.

Thank you so much for putting the time and effort into doing this, I really appreciate it. It's so fascinating to read the parallels made between the original and our version, and what matches up and what Minekura-sensei just randomly threw together as she felt like it;)

It just shows what an amazing amount of thought she put into the characters and their stories and how they fit in.
