Thickener recommendations: 1/4 cup cornstarch per 6-7 cups berries OR 1 tablespoon guar gum (you can get this at just about any decent grocery store--Bob's Mill sells the stuff in big ole bags). Flour works in a pinch, too, but these two are the ones that are most effective.

I have several chocolate cake recipes for you to try out if you want something a bit fluffier than the devil's food cake.

I did use a bit of cornstarch to thicken the berries, but I wasn't sure how much was too much. (I didn't measure so much as dump it in until I felt it was enough.)

If you have chocolate cake recipes, I would be glad to try them out.

It's better to make a slurry with your cornstarch and stir it into your mix while it's cooking. Take your cornstarch, add some water, mix it thoroughly (I always use my fingers), start stirring the fruit mix, and pour it in slowly. Otherwise it can get clumpy.

Ooh, that would be helpful. Thanks for the tip.
