While I wouldn't discourage you from branching out if you want to, you have barely scratched the surface of what you can do with layer cakes. Have you started splitting the layers in half yet, for instance? Made a Black Forest Torte yet? etc. :)
I recommend a Bundt pan for your first purchase. You can get an octopus one, if you insist.
As both you and misshepshu point out, yes there's more I can do with layer cakes. I will not be moving on from them forever, more gaining some breadth of field (so to speak).
I agree with Wendy--you haven't begun to experiment with layer cakes yet. But if you want to branch out, a bundt pan or angel food cake is a great direction to go. I have several recipes for you to try, including the best angel food cake ever and an incredible mocha rum cake.
No, I haven't. But I would like to gain some breadth. And I want cheese cake, among other things. This does not mean the layer cakes will cease, not by any means.
And any recipes you want to send my way are greatly appreciated.
