I was born on the east coast of the United States. Right smack in the middle between North and South. I only stayed there until I was 5 years old.

I grew up mostly in the dry dust of the Mojave Desert, just outside of Las Vegas. Parts of me are still strewn about there, in the smell of an August rain, tobacco, and heat-baked asphalt; in the well- ( Read more... )

The only problem with blanketing it like this is that, really, you want everything to be like it was in your college town. The society around colleges is not nearly the same as it is in business cities or outside of that radius of educated young adults spreading their boredom around in a well meaning radius ( ... )

That's a bit of a comparative, though. Compared to GA and FL down here, I'd imagine Salem would be degraded as practically commie by most of the people I work with here on the Navy Base, but could be considered conservative compared to Seattle or Portland as you said.

And I didn't grow up in Buffalo. I grew up in Florida. Less than ten hours of sun a day for 360 days out of the year would be pretty different compared to this. So it would probably be a pretty big shock to my body which isn't adapted to that kind of climate. Etc, etc.

It's different when you grow up there. I remember telling my mother when I was a kid, "My drive and purpose is to get as far away from Oregon as possible." It worked since I'm in Toronto now. Also, the reason Salem sucks so much is because it's a commuter town. Nobody moves to Salem intentionally, it's just a place people go to work for the state and then drive home (or go to prison).

Toronto > everywhere else

Yeah, I get that it's mostly a "grass in greener" thing for me. I had the same drive to get out of Nevada.

Unfortunately, I don't think Juu will let me move to Toronto. She's already wary of going as far north as Oregon. :\
