Personality: Bekir hasn't forgotten the betrayals that have earned him his position, and he's never sought to end the constant threat of his husband and his wife's family. He thinks one day they will kill him, and he will deserve it. But he did it for the Free City, the one thing he really believes in. A belief, ironically, fostered by the modern, liberalizing culture that was growing in Venice during his time there. Bekir is otherwise a cynic and a skeptic, and though he finds some comfort in the rites and rhetoric of his Alevite youth, he can't quite find the faith in him that others seem to possess. His time as a spy never really passed, and so while he plays at being affably cantankerous, like an eccentric uncle, he constantly pushes at those around them to see what he can provoke. His fortune rests partly on the graft and corruption common to industry, but he justifies this by keeping a tight rein on things, and several prominent builders have had boating accidents after cutting one too many corners.
