So when I want to share a photograph or story now, do I post to both LJ AND Facebook as I've done today? Is the duplication too much? Will I be bothering friends, and will that make me more likely to be ignored?

1. no you don't have to. you can use both applications for different purposes

I was thinking about using the application where if you post in LJ, it automatically forwards to your Facebook... but I'm not sure that would be any better.

yeah i don't think it would be any different in the effect but it would be easier if your intention is to post on both venues.
I do think it is a good marketing option for you to post those pictures that you think shows most of your ability and creative eye.
