Choices: The Movie

Jan 21, 2004 19:47

Inspired by a few pals, here's that recommend-something meme:

Please recommend:

01. A movie
02. A book
03. A musical artist, song, or album
04. An LJ user not on my friends list

BONUS:
05. Some other piece of media--newspaper, teevee show, website, video game, whatever.

Then, if you please, add any or all of this request to your own LJ.

movie: ganja and hess. 1970s blaxploitation movie about vampires and voudoun, only not. duane jones stars and the little-known actress marlene clark will clean your clock.

book: american gods, neil gaiman. in some ways the literary equivalent of the band's "brown album".

musical artist/album: van dyke parks, discover america. a bunch of american songs played by parks and the esso trinidadian steel band. you haven't lived 'til you've heard "the star spangled banner" on steel drums.

lj user: wileypeter

other media: venus magazine. a woman's magazine with more about music than hair care. see what the other half really cares about.

I hadn't heard of Ganja and Hess, though I'm reading about it almost as we speak.

I've been meaning to pick up American Gods for a while; I think your recommendation will be the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. I never really understood that expression, probably because, well, if people ever used the word 'straw' to refer to a singular piece/blade of straw, they don't seem to any more.

For that matter, I've been meaning to listen to Discover America for a while too (wow, you're on a real America jag), at least since seeing some bizarre Beach Boys made-for-teevee movie.

trying to remember the lyrics to that goddamned simon & garfunkel song.

reason #1 for the "american jag" is that i'm a big mythology buff, and i like to complement my amateur studies of the greeks with other mythologies, tall tales, and fairy tales. right now i'm interested in american mythology. reason #2? it's a really confusing time to be an american right now, and i'm trying to understand the country in which i live not through our simian leader but by studying what we came from and what we find/found important that's reflected in mythology.

anywayses. american gods isn't incredibly amazing, but i know how i would want to direct it if someone gave me the opportunity to make it into a movie. if you're really serious about listening to van dyke parks, i would suggest that you start with his mad masterpiece, song cycle, which is worth the search you'd put in for it. i found discover america around the same time i first heard the band's brown album and the two complement one another in a big, interesting way. vdp was the ( ... )

This is hard because a lot of the stuff I like, you already know about and like. But I know how much you dig these things, so here goes:

Movie: The Pillow Book. You like books and eroticism and cute naked Asian women- you'd probably like this movie.

Book: This one's really hard because everything I would normally recommend to someone, you've already read. The book I just finished, which you would probably like, is Karen Finley's A Different Kind of Intimacy. It's a collective, so you might've read some of the stuff already, but hey, read it again.

Musical Artist: Jeff Buckley. I can't remember if I ever made you listen to him, and if so what you thought, but I think the late Mr. Buckley has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I dare you to not tear up during his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

Something else: America's Next Top Model. I know what you're thinking, but just watch it once. For me.

I do like The Pillow Book.

Hmm. Is that my copy of 'A Different Kind of Intimacy' you just finished?

I don't think you ever made me listen to Jeff Buckley, not in a I-was-real-conscious-of-it kinda way anyway.

What's America's Next Top Model? Sounds like a trainwreck. I might not mean that in a bad way. What network is it even on?

Damn you! See why it's hard to recommend things to you? You've seen/read/heard everything. Feh. Anyway, no, I don't have your copy of A Different Kind of Intimacy. I bought mine at the Half Price a couple months ago. Oh, America's Next Top Model? It's on the UPN network, Tuesday nights at 9. Er, I guess it would be 8 for you. It's very entertaining, in a trainwrecky kind of way.
