The system changed to allocate the spirit of patriotism, to ensure that the ideals of equality were shared by all citizens of this country.i appreciate your sentiments, and i don't mean to preach, but this isn't really correct with regard to the electoral college. it's an inherently undemocratic institution specifically designed to preserve inequality in voting. it was created at the insistence of southern states, who would not ratify the constitution without it. but nearly all the founding fathers, despite the praise we give them today, were fundamentally opposed to real democracy. at stake for them was the protection of the property (land in the north, human beings in the south) of the upper classes from the lower classes who had none. recall that in the declaration, jefferson changed the original phrase he plagiarized from locke, which mentioned life, liberty, and property, because actually mentioning property in one of the country's founding documents would create the basis of a legal claim from the nation's propertyless classes. Oh fuck, that sucks.

I think the point I was trying to make was that we have people telling us how far America has come, allowing "everybody" to have an equal say in the elections...yet we still use the electoral college. A vote in California is worth 55, while a vote in Idaho is only worth 4. It would be too hard for Presidential candidates to appeal to American citizens, so they just appeal to individual states. That is to say that they play on people's hopes and fears, needs and wants...and don't deliver a damn thing except for further division of this country.

I'm really sorry to be off topic. :) I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me adding you to my friendslist? I saw your debate on paveway's journal and have read a few more of your entries. Needless to say you're both entertaining and well informed, and I'm lazy and would like to be able to see your new posts by just flipping to my friend's list. :}

Unfortunately, I can't promise that I'll be updating my journal with material interesting to you, but... yea. I'd just like to read your journal. :)

Thank you.

Gracias! Well, if you put it that way then it is all good. I shall add you back. I am interested in perspective whether it be on things like the fashion, weather, politics, or humor -- that is what I am about. =)
