For many years, my Dad and I have argued over one of the stupidest of nature's mysteries: does hot water freeze faster than cold water?

He claims he filled two ice trays with hot and cold water, and sure enough, the hot one froze faster. That one experience (I won't honor it with the term experiment) convinced him this old wives' tale is true.
